The Story
What it’s aboutWelcome to Leonida. Rockstar Games returns to Vice City — and the sun-soaked state around it — in the biggest open world the studio has ever built, following Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval through a criminal conspiracy that stretches across the sunniest, darkest corner of America.
Nearly thirty years of setting the bar
Grand Theft Auto began in 1997 as a top-down crime game from a small Scottish studio called DMA Design. Nobody predicted what came next. In 2001, Grand Theft Auto III moved the series into full 3D and effectively invented the modern open-world game — a living city you could explore freely, where the story found you as much as you found it. Every open-world game since lives in its shadow.
Vice City (2002) turned the neon-noir ’80s fantasy into legend. San Andreas (2004) went bigger — a whole state, a whole era. GTA IV (2008) brought the series into HD. Then came Grand Theft Auto V in 2013: three protagonists, Los Santos, and numbers that broke every record in entertainment. More than 200 million copies sold. Over $8 billion in revenue. The best-selling entertainment product of all time — not just in games, in everything.
Rockstar has spent more than a decade building the follow-up, and the road here wasn’t quiet. In September 2022, one of the biggest leaks in video game history put early GTA VI footage across the internet. Rockstar confirmed it was real and kept building. The release date moved — 2025, then May 2026, and finally November 19, 2026. Every delay only raised the stakes.
Welcome back to Vice City
The setting is Leonida, Rockstar’s fictional Florida — and at its heart, Vice City, the most beloved location in the series’ history. Trailer 2 and the Extended Look reveal a map of staggering scale: Vice City alone dwarfs Los Santos, with swamps, keys, beaches, and neon streets stretching across the state.
Lucia and Jason
For the first time in the series’ history, one of the two protagonists is a woman. Lucia Caminos — fresh out of prison when the story begins — and Jason Duval, an Army veteran who drifted into running jobs for drug smugglers in the Leonida Keys. When an easy score goes wrong, they’re pulled into a criminal conspiracy stretching across Leonida. Rockstar’s own synopsis frames it plainly: forced to rely on each other more than ever if they want to make it out alive. It’s a Bonnie-and-Clyde dynamic the series has never attempted — intimate as much as explosive.
What we know
The Extended Look — 26 minutes captured entirely in-game on a base PlayStation 5 — shows more than 600,000 unique animations, an overhauled wanted system where police identify you by clothing and vehicle, and a phone that works as a real system instead of a menu. Rockstar has confirmed no microtransactions in single player. This is next-gen only: PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S at launch, with no PC date announced.
The road to November 19
The date on the box has moved twice. Rockstar first revealed the game in December 2023 with a 2025 window; in May 2025 it pushed to May 26, 2026, and six months later — announced November 6, 2025 — to the current target of November 19, 2026. Each delay came with the same brief Rockstar statement: more polish time. The second one sent Take-Two’s stock down as much as 18% in a day — a reminder that this is the most expensive release window in entertainment history. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick confirmed in February 2026 that the November date remains on track, with the full marketing campaign beginning in summer 2026. Thirteen years after GTA V, nobody is rushing this.

Why this is the biggest release of the decade
Numbers first: Grand Theft Auto V has sold over 200 million copies and generated more than $8 billion — the most profitable entertainment product ever made. Its successor arrives into a world where the trailers are events: Trailer 1 broke YouTube records in December 2023, and Trailer 2 (May 2025) drew over 475 million views in 24 hours. The cultural footprint is already visible — Reddit threads treating the launch like a global tech event, PC players buying used PS5s for $200–$375 just to play on day one, and an active debate over whether the multiplayer component will hold until mid-2027. Lucia Caminos is the franchise’s first playable female protagonist, and the Bonnie-and-Clyde dynamic with Jason Duval gives the story a shape GTA has never tried. The only honest footnote: PC has no date, Rockstar’s marketing has been famously muted, and delay fatigue is real. But when November 19 arrives, the entire industry stops. Everybody knows it. Even Rockstar’s competitors cleared the calendar.
