The eighth main entry in Level-5's beloved puzzle-adventure series — and its first since 2017's Layton's Mystery Journey — returns to the original duo: Professor Hershel Layton (voiced by Yo Oizumi) and his former apprentice Luke Triton (voiced by Mio Imada). Set one year after Professor Layton and the Unwound Future, the story finds Luke living in America, renowned in the town of Steam Bison as "Great Detective Luke." When a strange incident grips the town, Luke writes to Layton for help, and the two reunite in a rapidly developing metropolis powered by highly advanced steam technology — even beyond London's — to investigate the mystery of the ghostly cowboy, Gunman Joe. Players control both Layton and Luke across full 3D streets in the series' first graphical overhaul, while the classic point-and-click investigation style remains intact. The game promises the biggest collection of puzzles in series history, designed by Japanese quiz think tank QuizKnock (led by Takuji Izawa) following the passing of original Puzzle Master Akira Tago. Music comes from Tomohito Nishiura, with the main theme composed by Joe Hisaishi and sung by Lilas Ikuta (ikura of YOASOBI). The September 2026 Nintendo Direct delivered the release-date trailer, and Level-5 showed 17 minutes of demo gameplay at Tokyo Game Show 2026. For the first time in franchise history, the game launches beyond Nintendo hardware: December 10, 2026 on Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam. A franchise that has sold more than 18 million units worldwide makes its grand return nearly a decade after its last mainline entry.
