LAS VEGAS — FRIDAY, OCTOBER 9, 2026 — Tonight is the season. Not a must-win in the rhetorical sense — a must-win in the literal one, because if the Aces lose tonight, the defending WNBA champions are done, and the Valkyries — the second-year expansion team — are headed to the Finals. Game 3 tips at 6:30 p.m. PDT at Michelob ULTRA Arena, and after two games in the Bay that slipped away in the final minute, the Aces are out of margin, out of excuses, and out of healthy bodies.
01 How We Got Here: 83-81, and a Dagger From Deep
Wednesday's Game 2 at Chase Center was a classic that will haunt Las Vegas if the season ends tonight. The Aces trailed 66-55 entering the fourth and were down 17 in the third, per USA Today — then roared all the way back. Chelsea Gray's jumper made it 73-68 with 4:46 left, Dana Evans' three cut it to 74-71, and Gray's tying triple with 2:10 to go completed the comeback, as the AP reported.
Then Veronica Burton — who had been held scoreless all night — pulled up from deep with 41 seconds left and buried her only basket of the game to put Golden State ahead, per the AP. She added two free throws, and when Jackie Young's second free throw rimmed out with six seconds left and Gray's layup got blocked by Kiah Stokes at the buzzer, it was over: 83-81 Valkyries, and a 2-0 series lead. "I think I held my breath the whole time the ball was in the air," Tiffany Hayes said of Burton's shot, via the AP. Hayes had 21 points off the bench against her former team — she missed all of last postseason with a knee injury, and she's been Golden State's X-factor in this series.
Game 1 wasn't close: the Valkyries won 71-60 on Sunday, holding the Aces to a season-low 60 points on 33.9 percent shooting while out-rebounding them 52-25, per ClutchPoints. Read our Game 1 recap and our Game 2 preview for the full picture of how this got away.

02 The Injury Crisis
Let's be blunt: the Aces are running out of players. Jewell Loyd exited Game 1 early in the third quarter with a left leg injury — scoreless, 0-for-2, 17 minutes — and was ruled out for Game 2, per USA Today and Reuters. NaLyssa Smith is out for the season with a left leg injury, Stephanie Talbot is questionable with a left leg issue, and Dana Evans is doubtful with a right knee injury, per Reuters. That's four rotation players compromised or gone.
For the depth of the crisis, read our Game 2 injury report. Becky Hammon didn't sugarcoat it after Game 2, calling the first half "abysmal," per the AP: "That Burton 3 was massive. We battled back and gave ourselves a shot after a really abysmal first half." Her message for tonight, via TSN: "I can't convince them that this is not a must-win, because if we lose we go home, and we stay home. The goal is to get one quarter at a time."
03 What Has to Change Tonight
Three things. First: the boards. Getting out-rebounded 52-25 in Game 1 is not a bad night, it's a structural failure — Jonquel Jones' absence for Golden State (she's with the Liberty in the other semi) should make the paint winnable, and the Aces still got mauled. Second: someone other than A'ja Wilson has to score in the fourth quarter. Wilson has 24 in both games on a combined 17-for-37, and she's averaging 28.8 in these playoffs, per USA Today — but the Valkyries have decided they can live with her 24 if nobody else gets 15.
Third: the start. The Aces have been buried at halftime twice. At home, with the season on the line, that can't happen a third time. Hammon's rotations will be the story — with Loyd likely out again and Evans doubtful, the minutes have to come from somewhere, and the Valkyries' bench (Hayes' 21, Kayla Thornton's 16 in Game 2, Gabby Williams' 20) is winning the depth battle decisively, per the AP.

04 Tonight: the Details
Game 3 is tonight — Friday, Oct. 9 — at 6:30 p.m. PDT at Michelob ULTRA Arena at Mandalay Bay, per AXS and the arena's schedule. Tickets were listed from $40, per TicketIQ, so there's no excuse for an empty seat. The broadcast is on Peacock and NBCSN, per the official game listing. If the Aces win, Game 4 is Sunday back in Vegas; if they lose, the season's over and the Valkyries — the first expansion team to make the playoffs in year one — are one win from the Finals in year two.
And there's this: A'ja Wilson was presented with her fifth MVP trophy after practice on Thursday, per USA Today. "Everyone in this room knows the competitor that I am and where my focus is, and that is to get a game," she said. The best player in the world, at home, facing elimination, with a fresh MVP trophy. If that doesn't get 8,000 people screaming, nothing will.

05 Meanwhile, in the Other Semi
Keep an eye on the other side of the bracket, because the Aces' potential Finals opponent is getting decided too: the Atlanta Dream lead the New York Liberty 2-0 after a 101-98 overtime thriller on Wednesday night at State Farm Arena, per USA Today. Angel Reese hit clutch free throws — one with 15 seconds left in regulation to go up three, then two more with 4.3 seconds left in OT to seal it — and finished with 23 points alongside Jordin Canada's 23, per the AP. Breanna Stewart was otherworldly in defeat: 35 points, 11 rebounds, 6 assists — the first 35-10-5 playoff game in WNBA history, per multiple reports. Game 3 of that series is tonight at Barclays Center, and the Liberty are in the same win-or-go-home boat as the Aces.
