SATURDAY, OCTOBER 3, 2026 — One week from today, sneakerheads get the one they've actually been waiting on. The Air Jordan 1 High OG 'Royal' (IQ5495-005) drops October 10 on Nike SNKRS at 9 a.m. ET for $185 — and for the first time since 2017, it's the real thing: smooth leather, the true 1985 color blocking, no suede detours and no shortcuts. Nike itself calls this the debut AJ1 'Royal' returning "true to form," and it arrives in full family sizing.
The Royal isn't just another retro in an endless stream of them. It's one of the original 1985 heavyweights — black and royal blue where the Bulls-era colorways went red — and it has sat near the top of every collector's grail list since day one. A faithful leather return, timed with Jordan Brand reportedly pulling back on AJ1 High releases, is the kind of release that resets the conversation around the whole silhouette.
The first real 'Royal' in nearly a decade
Here's the history that matters. The 'Royal' last released in 2017 — and that pair used a tumbled leather that never quite matched the original. Then the 2023 'Royal Reimagined' went full suede, which looked great in the lookbook but took the colorway even further from its 1985 recipe. What collectors have been asking for, loudly, for nine years: the original, in leather, done the way Peter Moore designed it.
This is that pair. The 2026 version uses smooth leather throughout — black through the base, Varsity Royal on the toe box, Swooshes, ankle and heel — with a white midsole and royal blue outsole. Sneaker Bar Detroit notes the blue leather carries a little more texture than the 2017 pair, especially around the collar and the back of the shoe. The silhouette is the standard High OG construction, not the '85 shape — a notable detail, because Jordan Brand has used the High 85 model for every original-colorway retro this decade since the 2020 "New Beginnings" Pack (the 2021 "Neutral Grey," the 2024 "Metallic Burgundy," this year's "Bred"). The Royal breaks that pattern, and it works.

The box tells the "Flight Guy" story
The 'Royal' has one of the great origin stories in sneaker culture, and Jordan Brand finally built the packaging to match. Back in 1985, Nike brought photographer Chuck Kuhn to Oregon for a shoot with a 22-year-old Michael Jordan. Instead of a black-and-red pair tied to the Bulls, Jordan wore the Royal. One image from that session — Jordan alone on an open road — became the "Flight Guy" poster, one of the most famous photographs ever taken for Nike.
That's the entire mythology of this colorway. As Sneaker Bar Detroit points out, Jordan never wore the Royal Air Jordan 1 during an NBA game — its history was made off the court, in that shoot. So the 2026 box goes straight back to the source: the packaging puts the road photo across the outside of the box, with more images from the Kuhn session inside, and the pair comes with black and Game Royal laces. It's a storytelling box for a colorway whose story has always been a photograph.

Why this one lands while the AJ1 market cools
Context matters here, because the AJ1 market has been cooling in real time. The 2025 'Shattered Backboard' eventually traded below retail. Rare Air releases sat on shelves. As Men's Journal's sneaker desk put it, another Jordan 1 isn't automatically an event anymore.
The 'Royal' is different — and the timing is the other half of the story. Sneaker Bar Detroit reports that Air Jordan 1 High releases are expected to decrease significantly beginning in Spring 2027. Put those two things together — fewer AJ1s on the shelf, and one of the true 1985 grails arriving in its most faithful form in nine years — and you have a release that could bring back the anticipation the silhouette has lost. For collectors who've watched the market get watered down, a Royal in real leather feels like a correction.
A stacked October around it
The Royal doesn't arrive in a vacuum — October 2026 is one of the busiest Jordan months of the year. The women's Air Jordan 3 'Fireside' (CK9246-200) in velvet brown with pearl white accents dropped today, October 3, alongside the Air Jordan 16 and Air Jordan 14 Low 'Black Pack' releases. Looking ahead, the SoleFly x Air Jordan 5 lands October 8, the Air Jordan 5 'Halloween' (HQ7978-001) in black and picante red arrives October 17 for $215, and the month closes with the Air Jordan 12 'Fireside' on October 24 and the Air Jordan 14 'Forest Green' on October 31.

The play for October 10 is simple. SNKRS is the confirmed destination — 9 a.m. ET, $185 — and Jordan Brand retailers are expected to carry the pair as release day approaches. Given the combination of the first leather Royal since 2017, the Chuck Kuhn storytelling, and the looming slowdown in AJ1 releases, waiting until the last minute feels like the wrong move on this one.

Our style and sneakers coverage will be tracking the October 10 drop and every major Jordan release through the holidays, and the culture desk has more on the drops shaping the season.
