CHICAGO, OCTOBER 5, 2026 — A 7-year-old girl was stabbed to death in broad daylight Saturday while walking along a sidewalk in Chicago’s Chatham neighborhood, police said, in an attack so sudden that witnesses chased the suspect down themselves and held her until officers arrived.
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the girl as Edimari Hernandez Chacon. Chicago police said she was walking southbound on the sidewalk in the 8600 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue, near East 86th Street in the East Chatham neighborhood, around 11:55 a.m. Saturday when an adult woman approached her, displayed a sharp object, and stabbed her multiple times in the back. The girl was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The bystanders who stopped her
What happened next was captured on surveillance video obtained by NBC Chicago: people rushing toward the scene, then running after the fleeing suspect. Witnesses detained the woman and held her until police arrived, authorities said. She was injured as bystanders held her — one witness told WGN that a bystander struck her with jumper cables until she fell — and she was taken to a hospital with injuries described as non-life-threatening before being placed in police custody. Charges were pending as of Sunday.
“I noticed there was a little girl laying on the ground. There was people standing over her,” William Smith, who works at a nearby barbershop, told WGN. “I heard a young lady, or somebody, say, ‘That’s the lady. She did it. She’s running.’”
In videos obtained by NBC Chicago, bystanders are seen chasing the woman down the sidewalk carrying what appear to be jumper cables. A witness told WGN that one of the bystanders struck the suspect with the cables until she fell, after which others held her down until officers arrived.
Police sources told WGN the suspect is 48 years old and did not know the girl, though other outlets noted police had not formally said whether the two knew each other. Security video reviewed by ABC7 appeared to show the girl walking hand-in-hand with a woman shortly before the attack, and a second video showed people running toward the scene to stop the suspect. Family members told WGN the girl had been out walking with her older sister at the time.
The attack happened on a residential stretch of East Chatham on Chicago’s South Side, in daylight, on a Saturday morning — the kind of ordinary moment that has made the killing reverberate well beyond the block. As of Sunday, no charges had been announced and police had not publicly identified the woman in custody.
“No child should ever have to experience violence”
Alderwoman Michelle Harris of the 8th Ward said in a statement after the attack: “I am deeply saddened by the senseless stabbing of a 7 year old child in our neighborhood. My heart goes out to her family, friends, and everyone who is affected by this horrific incident. No child should ever have to experience violence or fear while simply walking down the sidewalk.”
Harris also recognized the strangers who intervened. “I also want to recognize and thank the bystanders who quickly intervened,” she said — “helping to detain the suspect and get assistance on the way. Their quick actions may have prevented further harm.” She urged anyone with information to contact the Chicago Police Department: “Our community must come together to support the victim and hold the perpetrator accountable.”
In the neighborhood, grief mixed with disbelief. “I just don’t know what this world is coming to … for a 7-year-old like that to be getting stabbed,” resident Denesta Freeman told ABC7. “I never thought it would come to this point. I never did. These kids nowadays are not getting to live their life.” Another woman, who asked that her face not be shown, told the station the girl’s death hit close to home: “The poor baby had nothing to do with what was going on,” she said. “As a mom, I feel hurt! Because my daughter is the same age. I feel hurt! I feel like it was my child.” Family members gathered outside Comer Children’s Hospital on Saturday.
What police haven’t said
As of Sunday, authorities had not established a motive, had not said whether the stabbing was a random attack, and had not publicly identified the suspect. Area Two detectives are investigating. The speed of the bystander response — and the fact that a child was killed on a Saturday morning sidewalk in a residential neighborhood — has made the case a flashpoint in the city’s ongoing reckoning with street violence, even as the facts of this particular attack remain thin.
What is known is the outline police have confirmed: a 7-year-old walking down Cottage Grove on a Saturday morning, a stranger with a sharp object, and a neighborhood left to ask how it happened.
