Chiefs' Tyquan Thornton Carted Off at Allegiant With Gruesome Ankle Injury After Career Day

Thornton's left ankle was left visibly dislocated after a 55-yard catch at Allegiant Stadium. A former NFL team physician assessed it as a fracture-dislocation. No official diagnosis yet — but his season is likely over.

— Chiefs wide receiver Tyquan Thornton went from the best game of his career to a cart ride to the locker room in a matter of seconds Sunday at Allegiant Stadium, suffering a gruesome left ankle injury in the fourth quarter of Kansas City's 30-27 win over the Raiders. The Chiefs quickly ruled him out, and while the team has yet to release an official diagnosis, the early assessment is grim: USA Today reports his season is likely over.

It happened with Kansas City trailing 19-17 and the game hanging in the balance. Patrick Mahomes launched a deep ball to Thornton, who had beaten Raiders defensive back Treydan Stukes. Thornton hauled in the 55-yard catch and was dragged down at the Las Vegas 5-yard line with Stukes' full weight landing on his left ankle — what NBC Sports' broadcast crew identified as an apparent hip-drop tackle. Thornton popped up to celebrate the catch, then realized something was badly wrong and collapsed back to the turf.

That was the moment the stadium went quiet. The CBS broadcast, with Jim Nantz and J.J. Watt on the call, showed Thornton's left foot positioned in a clearly unnatural direction — bad enough that CBS refused to show the full replay to viewers. ESPN's Mina Kimes summed it up on social media with a simple warning: "DO NOT LOOK AT THAT ANKLE." Trainers placed Thornton's leg in an air cast before he was carted into the locker room.

Before the injury, Thornton was having the game of his life: five catches for 111 yards and two touchdowns on eight targets, all team highs at the time he left. He had been thrust into a bigger role after Rashee Rice departed earlier with a hamstring injury, and he delivered — becoming Mahomes' most productive target on the afternoon. The Chiefs scored on the very next play after his 55-yard grab to retake the lead at 23-19.

Former NFL team physician Dr. David Chao, reviewing the broadcast footage, assessed the injury as a left ankle fracture-dislocation — though he was clear this was an unofficial evaluation of the video, not a team diagnosis. USA Today likewise framed the likely outcome plainly: his season is probably done, and even a best-case timeline keeps him out for an extended period. The Chiefs have not yet announced any official timeline.

For Kansas City, the loss stings twice over. Thornton, a Baylor product drafted by the Patriots in the second round of the 2022 NFL draft, had re-signed with the Chiefs in March on a two-year, $11 million deal and was emerging as a trusted piece of the receiving corps. With Rice's hamstring also an unknown and Thornton presumably gone, the Chiefs' depth chart suddenly leans heavily on Xavier Worthy, Jalen Royals and Cyrus Allen behind the starters. The Chiefs dressed just six receivers for the game: Rice, Worthy, Thornton, Royals, Allen and Nikko Remigio.

Thornton went down in the fourth quarter of a game neither side could afford to lose. Both teams had entered Sunday unbeaten at 3-0, and the afternoon at Allegiant Stadium had turned into a shootout — Kansas City trailed 19-17 when Mahomes let it fly. The injury happened around 16:17 PT, per NBC Sports’ broadcast timestamp. The Chiefs scored on the very next play and went on to win 30-27, staying perfect and seizing control of the AFC West race. It was the kind of win that should define a season — and instead the afternoon will be remembered for the cart ride that ended it.

Sunday was shaping up as Thornton’s arrival. The 26-year-old Baylor product, a second-round pick of the Patriots in the 2022 NFL draft, re-signed with Kansas City on March 13, 2026 — a two-year, $11 million commitment — and five catches for 111 yards and two touchdowns on eight targets was the clearest return on that investment yet. Every number was a team high at the time he left the field. With Rashee Rice already out with a hamstring injury, Thornton had become Mahomes’ most trusted target of the afternoon, and the offense was running through him. Then, in one tackle, the breakout was gone.

The win itself keeps Kansas City perfect in the AFC West race — a battle of 3-0 teams at Allegiant that turned into a shootout. But on a night the Chiefs needed every yard, the image that will linger is Thornton being carted away moments after his biggest play. This story will be updated as official word on the injury becomes available.
