‘Daredevil: Born Again’ to End With Season 3 as Marvel Parts Ways With Showrunner

The Hollywood Reporter says the Disney+ series will conclude with its 2027 third season. Showrunner Dario Scardapane’s contract was not renewed, and he departed during post-production.

Daredevil: Born Again is coming to an end. The Disney+ series will conclude with its upcoming third season, expected to arrive in 2027, The Hollywood Reporter reported. The Wrap independently reported the same news. Marvel has not publicly commented on the decision.

It is a quiet ending for a show that began with enormous noise. When Marvel Studios revived Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock on Disney+ in 2025, the premiere drew a reported 7.5 million viewers in its first five days — the biggest Disney+ premiere of that year. The revival reunited much of the beloved Netflix-era cast and folded street-level Marvel back into the MCU. But despite strong reviews, the series reportedly never sustained the viewership of Marvel’s earlier Disney+ hits, and Season 2 saw a reported 50% drop in audience from the first.

A showrunner exits mid-post-production

The ending arrives alongside a jarring behind-the-scenes change. Marvel has parted ways with showrunner Dario Scardapane after his contract expired and was not renewed, with Scardapane departing while Season 3 was still in post-production. The timing is unusual: the final season wrapped filming roughly two months ago, and post-production is reportedly in its final stages — which means the person who shaped the scripts and the shoot will not be there to shape the final cut. It remains unclear who will see the season through to completion, and Marvel has announced no replacement.

Scardapane had been central to the revival’s creative turnaround. He joined the project after Marvel scrapped an earlier version of the show following the 2023 strikes, discarding scripts from the original head writers in favor of a tone closer to Netflix’s original Daredevil. That overhaul worked creatively — the revived series drew enthusiastic reviews for its return to the tone of the Netflix original — which makes his mid-post-production exit all the more eyebrow-raising.

Where Season 2 left Matt Murdock

(Spoilers for Season 2 ahead.) The Season 2 finale, “The Southern Cross,” which aired May 5, closed on a status quo that leaves Matt Murdock in prison and Wilson Fisk stripped of power. During Fisk’s trial, Matt took the stand and publicly revealed that he is Daredevil — the show’s “I Am Iron Man” moment — Scardapane’s own phrase for it in a Variety interview, where he said the reveal was planned since Season 1. The fallout was immediate: Fisk’s case was dismissed, and Matt was arrested for his past actions as Daredevil and sent to a maximum-security prison.

The finale left Fisk exiled from New York, forced to resign in disgrace and striking a deal with the Attorney General to avoid jail time — a kingpin without a kingdom, rebuilding his life without Vanessa and his former networks. Matt, meanwhile, faces a season drawn from the Devil in Cell-Block D comics storyline: a publicly exposed lawyer navigating the justice system from behind bars, surrounded by some of the same criminals he helped put away. Marvel’s head of streaming, Brad Winderbaum, has said Season 3 picks up about a year after Season 2 — roughly the real-life distance between the seasons.

Other threads are dangling too. In the finale’s closing moments, Heather Glenn donned Muse’s mask, Bullseye set off on a new path, and Luke Cage and Jessica Jones were reunited. Season 3 will have to tie all of it off — now with the added weight of being the series’ final chapter.

The Defenders assemble for the finale

If this is the end, Marvel is going out with a reunion. The final season brings back the Netflix-era Defenders in force: Krysten Ritter as Jessica Jones, Mike Colter as Luke Cage and Finn Jones as Danny Rand, a.k.a. Iron Fist — alongside Elodie Yung’s returning Elektra. Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio anchor the season as Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk, with Deborah Ann Woll (Karen Page), Wilson Bethel (Bullseye), Margarita Levieva (Heather Glenn) and others rounding out the cast.

The cast has already started saying goodbye. D’Onofrio posted a message to fans on Sept. 23: “We so enjoyed bringing Daredevil: Born Again to you all. You stuck with us, and I like to think we stuck with you. We have the final Season, season 3 heading your way next year with some very cool stuff. Much love to all who have been supportive. I love that character Fisk. Always will.” Woll, meanwhile, told viewers to “enjoy the last season, guys! We worked really hard on it. Grateful for you.”

Marvel Television’s pullback

The ending fits a broader retreat in Marvel’s streaming output. Wonder Man premiered earlier this year and earned several Emmy nominations — and was still un-renewed, with Disney and Marvel walking back the series despite the acclaim. The upcoming VisionQuest is being sold as the final installment in the WandaVision trilogy. Loki ended after two seasons. Until this week, Born Again was the last confirmed live-action series on Marvel’s slate, though the studio keeps three to five live-action shows in active development and has reportedly greenlit a spy thriller referred to as Zodiac.

For fans, the math is bittersweet: the Defenders finally reunite, but only to say goodbye. Season 3 of Daredevil: Born Again is expected on Disney+ in 2027. No premiere date has been announced.
