Eagles' Injury Report Is 11 Names Deep — Barkley and Smith Both Sidelined Wednesday

The two biggest names on the offense both missed practice with hamstrings, the starting center is hurt, and the offensive line is being reshaped on the fly. Sunday's trip to London just got a lot harder.

The Short Version

The Eagles' first Week 5 injury report is a long one. Eleven names. Seven did not practice. Both of the team's most productive offensive weapons sidelined with hamstrings. And the offensive line — the one thing that was supposed to be the foundation of everything — is somehow getting thinner every single day. Sunday's trip to London to face the Jaguars now looks like a serious depth test before it even starts.

Start with the headliners. Saquon Barkley and DeVonta Smith were both listed as did-not-practice with hamstring injuries when the report dropped Wednesday, per Eagles Wire. Barkley left Sunday's loss to the Rams after just four snaps; Smith missed that game entirely after sitting out all of last week's practice. NBC Sports Philadelphia's Dave Zangaro confirmed both were among the seven DNPs, alongside receiver Hollywood Brown (ankle), center Drew Kendall (knee), linebacker Jihaad Campbell (knee), safety Marcus Epps (groin) and edge rusher Jonathan Greenard (ankle).

The Barkley details matter for anyone holding him in fantasy or holding an Eagles futures ticket. Per Bleeding Green Nation, Barkley is considered week-to-week with the hamstring, and while he's expected to miss the Jaguars game, the Eagles are not expected to place him on injured reserve — which means the team believes he'll be back before the four-game minimum an IR stint would require. That's the glass-half-full read. The glass-half-empty read: hamstrings are liars, and a running back who managed four snaps last week isn't a lock for anything.

Smith's situation looks worse. He was trending toward missing extended time after sitting out the entire week of practice before the Rams game, and Wednesday's DNP does nothing to change that outlook, per Fox Sports. When a hamstring keeps a receiver out of two straight weeks of practice, you're not looking at a day-to-day thing.

Now the offensive line, where this goes from bad to genuinely alarming. Cam Jurgens was traded to Baltimore, Lane Johnson announced his retirement earlier this week, and Landon Dickerson is already hurt. Kendall had taken over at center after Jurgens moved to left guard — and now Kendall's knee is the newest problem. If he can't go, Philadelphia will be on its third different starting center through five games. The candidates at the pivot, per Bleeding Green Nation: Willie Lampkin, with Fred Johnson, Jake Majors or Micah Morris at left guard. Rookie Markel Bell, who started at right tackle against the Rams, projects to get the first shot at replacing Lane Johnson on the edge, per Eagles Wire.

There was at least some good news Wednesday. NBC Sports Philadelphia reported that tight end Dallas Goedert (knee), linebacker Zack Baun (concussion), tackle Fred Johnson (knee) and cornerback Quinyon Mitchell (knee) all returned to practice — though all were limited. Goedert has missed a couple of games with an MCL sprain suffered in Week 2, and getting him back would matter enormously for an offense that may be without its top two weapons. Baun missed the Rams game with a concussion but appears on track to return.

The running back room is the thinnest it has been all season. Barkley is week-to-week, and Tank Bigsby is on injured reserve after surgery. That leaves Will Shipley — a career 3.1-yards-per-carry back, per The Spun — as the only healthy running back on the active roster, with Dameon Pierce called up from the practice squad on Wednesday. Carson Steele and Jaydon Blue remain on the practice squad. For a team that entered the season keeping just three backs on the 53-man roster, the timing could not be worse.

The defense isn't spared either. Campbell (knee) and Greenard (ankle) are new DNPs alongside Epps (groin), while Baun and Mitchell are limited. Greenard is reportedly day-to-day, which suggests he could practice Thursday and still have a shot at Sunday — a very different prognosis from Barkley's week-to-week.

Context: this is a team that has already struggled to find its footing offensively this season, per Fox Sports, and now it's flying to London without — potentially — Barkley, Smith, its traded center, its retired right tackle and its injured starting guard. The Jaguars game was supposed to be a get-right spot. It might be a survival exercise instead.
