The Short Version

Elsbeth Tascioni is finally meeting her match — her mother. And CBS is giving the introduction the full prestige treatment: two-time Tony winner Christine Ebersole, plus guest turns from Uzo Aduba and Tyne Daly.

Elsbeth returns for Season 4 on Thursday, October 8, on CBS — and viewers should double-check their DVRs. The comedy-drama is moving off its longtime 10 p.m. perch to a new time: 9 p.m. ET / 8 p.m. CT on Thursdays, an hour earlier than before, as The Sun reported. The shift follows Matlock and Ghosts moving to midseason, and it slots Elsbeth behind Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage at 8 p.m. and the new comedy Eternally Yours at 8:30, with the new legal drama Cupertino — from Elsbeth creators Robert and Michelle King — taking the 10 p.m. hour.

The casting news, first reported exclusively by Variety and confirmed by multiple outlets, is the kind of guest-star firepower the show has made its signature. Uzo Aduba and Tyne Daly will each guest-star, while Christine Ebersole takes a recurring role as Elsbeth’s mother in the CBS crime drama. The fourth season of the spinoff based on The Good Wife and The Good Fight stars Emmy winner Carrie Preston as the astute but unconventional consent-decree attorney who works with the NYPD to catch New York’s most well-heeled murderers.

Character details, reported by Total Apex Entertainment, give a flavor of the season’s cases. Aduba plays Allegra Miller, described as a proud New Yorker fighting developers to keep her home — and poised to change her life forever. Aduba is known for two Emmy wins playing Suzanne Warren on Orange Is the New Black and a third Emmy for playing Shirley Chisholm in Mrs. America, with recent credits including The Residence, the Netflix limited series Painkiller, and Pixar’s Lightyear. Daly plays Helen Adler, a dedicated birder who is not afraid to ruffle feathers when her flock is threatened. Daly is a six-time Emmy winner and Tony winner, best known for playing Detective Mary Beth Lacey on the classic CBS series Cagney & Lacey.

Ebersole’s role is the season’s big swing. Playing Elsbeth’s mother, her character can charm anyone except her own daughter — a dynamic that instantly reframes everything we know about Elsbeth’s cheerful, eccentric exterior. Ebersole is a two-time Tony Award winner whose credits include Is This Thing On?, Bob Hearts Abishola, Licorice Pizza, and The Wolf of Wall Street. The show has kept Elsbeth’s family background largely off-screen across three seasons, so a recurring parental figure isn’t just stunt casting — it’s new mythology.

The new names join a Season 4 roster that was already stacked. BroadwayWorld reported the show previously added Lea Michele to the cast, along with Sam Richardson and Nat Faxon, while Nicole Scherzinger, Nicholas Braun, New York Knicks star OG Anunoby, and Jemima Kirke will also be featured this season. Carrie Preston and Wendell Pierce return as the series’ anchors.

The move to 9 p.m. is a vote of confidence disguised as a schedule shuffle. Elsbeth has aired mostly at 10/9c for its run, but several Season 3 episodes aired at 9 p.m. while filling in after Matlock’s season finale — and the network liked what it saw. The earlier hour puts the show in front of a bigger lead-in audience and signals that CBS views the Kings’ quirky procedural as a tentpole, not a nightcap. The series premiered on February 29, 2024, was renewed for Season 2 in April 2024, for Season 3 in February 2025, and for Season 4 in January 2026.

Behind the camera, the continuity is total: Robert King, Michelle King, Jonathan Tolins, Liz Glotzer, Erica Shelton Kodish, Bryan Goluboff, Gail Barringer, and Leah Nanako Winkler serve as executive producers, and the series is distributed by Paramount Global Content Distribution. The “howdunit” format — showing the audience the murder, then watching Elsbeth unravel it — remains one of broadcast TV’s most reliable engines, and Season 4’s guest list suggests the producers intend to keep feeding it premium fuel.

For CBS, tonight is a statement about the fall lineup: a proven hit in a bigger slot, surrounded by new comedies and a new legal drama from the same creative brain trust. For viewers, it’s simpler — an hour earlier, three spectacular new faces, and the same Elsbeth, bag of tricks and all. Season 4 premieres Thursday, October 8, at 9/8c on CBS.
