Fight Sports Daily, October 8: Title Night in Quebec City, UFC BJJ 12, and Charlo’s Latest Stall

Osleys Iglesias puts his IBF crown on the line tonight in Quebec City, UFC BJJ 12 goes down on Fight Pass, Jermall Charlo pulls out of October 17, and UFC Vegas 122 fight week keeps rolling toward Saturday.

The Short Version

Thursday is the rare fight-sports day where you do not have to choose: a real IBF title fight in Quebec City and a real UFC grappling card on Fight Pass go off within hours of each other, while the news cycle keeps handing out plot twists. Here is where the fight world stands on October 8.

The 168-pound boogeyman defends tonight

Osleys Iglesias is the most avoided man in boxing’s super middleweight division, and tonight in Quebec City he gets to remind everybody why. The Cuban southpaw (15-0, 14 KOs) defends his IBF and IBO titles against Denmark’s Oliver Zaren (19-0-1, 8 KOs) at the Théâtre Capitole, with the show starting at 6:30 p.m. ET on DAZN internationally. Both men made the 168-pound championship limit at yesterday’s weigh-in — Iglesias at 167.6, Zaren at 167.7.

Zaren deserves full credit for taking this. He is unbeaten, ranked No. 5 by the IBF, and his lone blemish — a technical-decision draw — came when an outdoor fight was stopped by a thunderstorm, which is somehow both the funniest and most unlucky footnote on any contender’s record this year. But Iglesias is the kind of fighter contenders usually price themselves out of: an explosive southpaw with genuine one-punch power and a title to offer, which makes the risk-reward math brutal for everyone else at 168. As Boxing News 24 noted, both Canelo Alvarez and Jaime Munguia declined chances at the vacant IBF strap earlier this year, which tells you everything about how the division views this man.

The undercard is genuinely worth tuning in early for. The co-feature puts 21-year-old Canadian prospect Wilkens Mathieu (16-0, 11 KOs) in with Vladimir Shishkin (17-2, 11 KOs) — the same Shishkin that Iglesias stopped about a year ago, so bring your measuring sticks. Also on the card: Leila Beaudoin (15-2) defends her interim WBA super featherweight title against Brisa Alfonzo, Imam Khataev (12-1) defends his NABF light heavyweight strap against Padraig McCrory (20-2), and undefeated lightweights Dzmitry Asanau (13-0) and Luis Santana (16-0) put their regional titles on the table in one fight. One late change: the Thomas Chabot featherweight bout was scrapped after the weigh-in when Chabot withdrew with a medical issue. We have a full preview of tonight’s card with the tale of the tape and what to watch for.

Charlo’s “last run” hits another wall

Jermall Charlo called this his last run. At this point it might be a jog in place. The former two-division champion has withdrawn from his October 17 bout with Koen Mazoudier at The Cosmopolitan after suffering an injury in training camp, according to reporting from The Ring’s Mike Coppinger — the second time this exact fight has collapsed in three months. The first attempt, scheduled for July in Sydney, died on fight week when Charlo was denied a visa into Australia.

Stepping in on ten days’ notice is former WBA super middleweight titlist Jose Armando Resendiz (16-3, 11 KOs), who The Ring called a strong replacement — and they are not wrong. Resendiz-Mazoudier shapes up as an action fight between two aggressive 168-pounders on the Sebastian Fundora undercard, which is honestly a better television product than the original bout was going to be. But for Charlo, the math is getting cruel. He is 36, he is 34-0 with 23 knockouts, and he has fought just four times in the last six years — his last outing a sixth-round stoppage of Thomas LaManna back in May 2025. Every comeback needs momentum, and momentum needs dates that actually happen.

Grappling takes over Fight Pass tonight

Two title fights in one night, and only one of them requires a plane ticket to Canada. UFC BJJ 12 goes down tonight at 8 p.m. ET (5 p.m. PT), streaming exclusively on UFC Fight Pass, headlined by Cassia Moura defending against Adele Fornarino for the inaugural UFC BJJ women’s flyweight title. The co-main is a banger for the submission crowd: Renato Canuto vs. Ethan Crelinsten for the lightweight crown, two of the most entertaining hunters in the sport.

The undercard hook is a familiar name: Gilbert Burns, the former UFC welterweight title challenger, continues his grappling chapter against Gabriel Almeida at middleweight after a successful UFC BJJ debut in June. Danielle Kelly vs. Thaynara Victoria at strawweight rounds out a card that is quietly one of the best pure-grappling lineups of the year.

Talbott’s next: the callout or the smart fight?

Payton Talbott called out Sean O’Malley after starching former champion Deiveson Figueiredo in the first round of UFC 332’s co-main event. T.J. Dillashaw, breaking the win down on the JAXXON podcast, gets the appeal — but he would rather see the 27-year-old prospect in with Marlon Vera next. “I’d love to see him against a top fighter now,” Dillashaw said, calling Vera a great suggestion for both men. Talbott (12-1) has now finished two straight former UFC champions, and the matchmakers’ choice here says a lot about how fast they want to push him: O’Malley is the money fight, Vera is the proving-ground fight. Smart money says the UFC picks money, but Dillashaw’s read — that Talbott needs a top-five gatekeeper before the ex-champ sweepstakes — is the veteran take.

Vegas 122 fight week: two days out, zero drama

Saturday’s card at the Meta Apex remains exactly as advertised, and the best development of the week came from the Englishman in the main event. Christian Leroy Duncan told reporters this week that headlining UFC Vegas 122 against Brendan Allen brings opportunity, not pressure — which is exactly what you want to hear from a 26-year-old walking into his first UFC main event. Allen (27-7, No. 4) vs. Duncan (15-2, No. 10) is a genuine crossroads fight at middleweight: the winner is suddenly in the conversation nobody at 185 can ignore.

The co-main keeps its juice too — Matheus Camilo rides a two-fight win streak into his lightweight bout with Jai Herbert, and the Brazilian told Cageside Press this week that his recent knockout is “just a small preview” of what is coming. Prelims start at 5 p.m. ET, the main card at 8 p.m. ET, all on Paramount+. Our full preview has the stylistic breakdown and the undercard worth your time.

The calendar keeps filling

A quick scan of what is coming, because October is quietly stacked. This Saturday in Chicago on DAZN: Floyd Schofield vs. Lucas Bahdi for the vacant WBA lightweight title, with Ricardo Sandoval vs. Sergio Mendoza for Sandoval’s WBA and WBC flyweight straps underneath. October 17 in London: Daniel Dubois vs. Fabio Wardley for Dubois’ WBO heavyweight title — file that one next to the heavyweight shakeup we have been tracking. And December 19 in Belfast keeps getting bigger: Queensberry confirmed this week that Lewis Crocker gets a home date with Owen Cooper on the same card as Anthony Cacace vs. Nick Ball. The winter fight calendar is officially loaded.

And the soap opera that never sleeps: the Shakur Stevenson–Devin Haney build keeps simmering, with Haney now talking about the pound-for-pound crown as the prize for beating Shakur at 145. Our breakdown of the deal — weight agreed, contract not yet signed — remains the one to watch. James has us following this one all the way to the signatures.
