Gears of War: E-Day Is Out Now — Critics Call It the Series' Best Campaign in Years

The Coalition's Emergence Day prequel launched October 6 on Xbox Series X|S and PC, day one on Game Pass. It holds an 87 on Metacritic — the fourth-highest score in franchise history — with TechRaptor calling it “the best game in the series.”

The wait is over. Gears of War: E-Day launched October 6, 2026 on Xbox Series X|S and PC — via Steam and the Xbox app — and is available day one on Game Pass, ending a seven-year wait for a new mainline entry in one of Xbox’s defining franchises. The Coalition’s prequel takes players back to Emergence Day itself, the day the Locust erupted from underground, with a young Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago caught in the opening hours of the invasion.

The early verdict, per a review roundup by Tech Times: an 87 on Metacritic across 54 critic reviews, the fourth-highest score in franchise history. That puts E-Day behind only the original trilogy — the 2006 original at 94, Gears of War 2 at 93, Gears of War 3 at 91 — and ahead of both Gears of War 4 and Gears 5, which finished at 84 apiece. The embargo lifted October 1, five days ahead of general availability, giving critics time to work through the campaign. What they found, mostly, was the best version of a classic Gears campaign in two decades.

The verdictWhat the reviews say

The high end of the critical range is genuinely enthusiastic. TechRaptor awarded the game 9.5/10 and called it “the best game in the series.” MondoXbox matched the 9.5 and called it the “strongest campaign in the series.” TheXboxHub went all the way to 100, calling E-Day “an absolute triumph of a game” with maps — in multiplayer and campaign alike — that reward exploration. GameOver.gr gave it a 95, praising the addition of a dedicated jump button for elevating the series’ cover-based moveset, and Xbox Achievements scored it 90, calling the campaign “an explosive ride” in which, it said, “being boots on the ground on day zero, as the invasion kicks off, is a wild experience.”

PC Gamer’s review, summarized across the enthusiast press, lands on the central trade-off: the cover shooting feels better than ever — more acrobatic movement, remapped controls, new threats like acid attacks and the torso-grappling Goreshot — but the campaign stretches familiar firefights across more than 20 hours, and the solo adventure can outstay its welcome. The review also flags the prequel’s narrative problem honestly: this origin story doesn’t give Marcus much of an origin, opening with him already resembling the cynical, traumatized veteran players know from the original game. Radio Times wrote that the game puts players in a position where “you’re watching an apocalypse play out in real time,” while noting the multiplayer offering feels thin at two modes.

The dissenting end is real but narrow. GameSpot scored it 7/10 and Wccftech 7.4/10, with the common criticisms across the lower scores being pacing issues, repetitive side objectives and enemy AI problems. Nobody is calling it bad; the debate is whether it’s a great Gears game or merely a very good one wearing the clothes of a 20-year-old original.

The asteriskWhat the 87 doesn’t cover

Here’s the material caveat every buyer should understand, and Tech Times states it plainly: both E-Day’s 12-player Horde Siege mode and its Versus Ranked competitive multiplayer were locked from reviewers during the embargo period. The 87 is a verdict on the campaign and the single-player package. What happens in the multiplayer modes — which the franchise has historically relied on to sustain a long-term player base — is still unknown, and the full-product verdict on E-Day cannot yet be rendered.

What reviewers did see of multiplayer comes mostly from early access: Horde Siege is the PVE offering, with squads taking on missions across a large map while competing against other groups, and Versus is the standard PVP — described as punishingly difficult for newcomers and brutally competitive for returning fans. Radio Times called the two-mode launch lineup “a little bit stingy” while enjoying both.

There’s also a sideshow worth naming accurately. As TheGamer reported, the game’s Premium Edition early access drew a wave of negative Steam reviews branding the game “woke” — aimed at a new character, at The Coalition’s partnership with the consultancy Hit Detection (which provides cultural and sensitivity evaluations), and at optional profile emblems tied to sexuality. The review-bombing hasn’t dented the actual consensus: the game sits at “Mostly Positive” on Steam with 75 percent of reviews positive, and the substantive criticism from players centers on Unreal Engine 5 performance demands, not the culture-war talking points. On PC specifically, early benchmarking is sobering — a 35-GPU TechPowerUp test found only seven cards clearing 60 fps at 1080p on Ludicrous settings, with upscaling and frame generation effectively required.

What you’re gettingThe package

The fundamentals: developed by The Coalition, published by Xbox Game Studios, running on Unreal Engine 5, rated Mature 17+ for intense violence, blood and gore, strong language and in-game purchases. The standard edition runs $70 / £60; players who bought the Premium Edition — or the Game Pass Premium Upgrade — have been playing since early access opened October 1. For everyone else, yesterday was day one, and Game Pass subscribers on Xbox Series X|S and PC get the full game at no additional cost.

The fall gauntletOpening shot of the season

Zoom out and E-Day’s real significance sharpens. This is the opening shot of the most stacked fall release calendar in years: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 lands October 23, Phantom Blade Zero and The Wolf Among Us Remastered both arrive October 29, and then Grand Theft Auto VI — the industry’s gravitational center — drops November 19. For Xbox, E-Day needed to do two jobs at once: remind everyone what a first-party blockbuster feels like, and give Game Pass subscribers a reason to stay subscribed through the most expensive quarter of the gaming year. On the first job, the reviews say it delivered. On the second, the multiplayer modes reviewers couldn’t test will decide it.
