Grimes Is Back With “ACCELERANDO” and Announces PSYOPERA, Her First Album on Her Own Label

An "Eve is online" trailer with biblical references, personified LLMs, and 70 humans behind it — plus a new single that goes from bubblegum to full shriek. Six years after Miss Anthropocene, Grimes finally has something to say.

Of course Grimes announced her new album like this. On Friday she dropped an Instagram video titled "Eve is online" — surreal visuals, bumping synths, a cryptic voice-over dropping biblical references and personifying large language models — and just like that, six years after Miss Anthropocene, the Grimes album cycle is officially back on. The record is called PSYOPERA. The first single, “ACCELERANDO,” is out now. And the whole thing is happening on her own terms this time — literally.

Let's get into it, because this one has layers.

"Eve is online"

"Please wait patiently for the failure of the system," reads the Instagram teaser — posted by Grimes herself on Friday. Then Grimes is heard saying "Welcome to the game" before launching into a monologue about God, artificial intelligence, Eden, and everything in between. A disoriented voice cuts in speaking from the first-person perspective, asking questions like "Where am I?" — presumably the point of view of an AI, per Consequence, backed up by Grimes' own comments in an Interview Magazine conversation and the teaser's title, "Eve is online."

As The Needle Drop wrote in its trailer writeup, the visuals flash images of weapons, missiles, destruction, and fires, spliced between a cyborg-ified version of Grimes, while she delivers a parody of the Gospel of John — "In the beginning was the Word and the Word was God" — that lands, as The Needle Drop wrote, on the new line: "On the first day, God created the large language model."

"ACCELERANDO" goes from bubblegum to shriek

The single is a reunion with VADAKIN — the same collaborator behind last year's AI-themed "Artificial Angels," which landed on Consequence's best-songs-of-2025 list. The new track plays with the juxtaposition of bubbly vocals against pulsing, ominous synths. The production is icy and aggressive, and Grimes eventually gives into the tension and lets out full-on shrieks, per Consequence. Stereogum wrote that it was "a huge, sweeping, apocalyptic dance track" and admitted that hearing her voice on it reminded them why she became such a big deal in the first place.

The accompanying music video, directed by Cho Giseok per The Needle Drop, hit YouTube on Friday. Between this and the new Worlds 2026 anthem, it’s been a stacked week for music drops. And the title fits the moment: an accelerando is a direction to gradually increase the tempo, which also describes the general feeling of living through 2026 if we're being honest.

First album on her own label — and no release date

Here's the part that actually matters for Grimes' career: PSYOPERA will be her first album on her own label, Nazgul Recording LLC. Per The Needle Drop, that follows her brief Columbia Records partnership, which produced exactly two singles — "Player of Games" and "Shinigami Eyes" — before fizzling out. The label math here is pretty simple: a major that can't make a Grimes album happen in six years doesn't get to keep her.

As for when the album arrives: no date, no tracklist. Per PLAYY. Magazine, songs previously floated as part of the project include "The Light Ages" and "Eve Is Online," but nothing is confirmed. Classic Grimes rollout — she announces the album exists and lets the internet do the rest.

The most Grimes sentence ever

Now, the contradiction sitting at the center of all this. PSYOPERA is an AI-themed concept album — per Stereogum, it's about the potential for human extinction at the hands of AI, and it grew out of her belief that humans aren't as inferior as some of the biggest AI acolytes claim. The whole aesthetic is LLMs, machine gods, metal Edens.

And yet, as Grimes tells it: she did not use any generative AI on the new batch of songs. None. Seventy humans spent months making the trailer, per Stereogum — real people, not a prompt. There is one wrinkle worth noting, also via Stereogum: she has said she used Deepseek to come up with lyrics for a song about Deepseek, which is either hypocrisy or the most on-the-nose art project of the year, depending on how you squint at it.

But the larger point stands. A press release accompanying the project states that PSYOPERA will, according to Our Culture Magazine's writeup, "cover everything Grimes witnessed as a woman of history during her hiatus from pop music." And what she witnessed, publicly, was the inside of the AI empire — the tech-god industrial complex from closer than anyone else in pop music has ever gotten. She's not singing about AI from a think piece. She lived next to it. Whether you think that's credibility or complicity is up to you, but there's no denying the vantage point is hers alone.

Why this one could actually matter

Let's be real about the last six years. Since Miss Anthropocene in 2020, Grimes has been in the public eye mostly for the wrong reasons — the relationship and legal battles with Elon Musk, the DJ-set controversies, the AI voice-clone experiments where she offered to split royalties with anyone who used her voice. The music kept coming in fits and starts, but there was no era, no center of gravity. She became a tabloid character instead of a pop star.

PSYOPERA is the first project since then that sounds like it has a thesis. Extinction anxiety as a dance record. A woman-of-history concept album from someone who genuinely sat at the table where the AI future is being negotiated. If there's an artist built to make the collapse of the world into the sun into a stadium singalong, it's the person who wrote "Oblivion" and meant it. "ACCELERANDO" isn't a nostalgia play — it's a reintroduction with sharper teeth.
