There is nothing in American sports quite like HBCU homecoming season. For eight straight weeks every fall, Black college campuses across the country become the center of the cultural universe — parades down streets named for legends, tailgates that are multi-generational institutions, step shows, concerts, and football games where halftime might outdraw the second half.
The 2026 season is officially underway. Here is your week-by-week guide to the homecomings and classics that matter, from this Saturday's Louisiana openers to Thanksgiving weekend's Bayou Classic.
OCTOBER 3 — THE OPENERS. Grambling State hosts Alcorn State in Grambling, Louisiana, where the World Famed Tiger Marching Band performs in the shadow of Eddie Robinson's legacy — 408 wins, fifteen Black college national championships. Down in Baton Rouge, Southern hosts Arkansas–Pine Bluff, and the Human Jukebox takes over A.W. Mumford Stadium. Two homecomings, one state, zero reason to be anywhere else.
OCTOBER 10 — DURHAM AND MONTGOMERY. North Carolina Central welcomes William & Mary to O'Kelly–Riddick Stadium. The Eagles are the 2022 Celebration Bowl champions — the team that ended Deion Sanders' undefeated season in overtime — and Durham will be packed. Meanwhile, Alabama State hosts Florida A&M in Montgomery, which means the Marching 100 comes to town. When the 100 travels, the road team brings the show with them.
OCTOBER 17 — THE BIG WEEKEND. Circle this one. Howard vs. Morehouse in Washington, D.C. — Howard Homecoming, the most famous homecoming in Black college culture, full stop. Yardfest, the parade, the step shows, tens of thousands on the yard. On the same day: Jackson State vs. Florida A&M in Jackson, Mississippi. The Sonic Boom of the South against the Marching 100. That is not a football game, that's a cultural summit. And Tennessee State hosts Morgan State in Nashville, with the Aristocrat of Bands performing in Music City.
OCTOBER 24 — ORANGEBURG AND TALLAHASSEE. South Carolina State — fresh off its 2025 Celebration Bowl title, the program's second in five years — hosts Norfolk State in Orangeburg, with the Marching 101 on the field. In Tallahassee, Florida A&M hosts Arkansas–Pine Bluff at Bragg Memorial Stadium. FAMU homecoming weekend turns Tallahassee into the center of the HBCU universe.
OCTOBER 31 — THE MAGIC CITY CLASSIC. Alabama A&M vs. Alabama State at Legion Field in Birmingham. The largest HBCU classic in America by attendance, played every Halloween weekend. If you only go to one classic, most folks will tell you to make it this one.
NOVEMBER 21 — THE FLORIDA CLASSIC. Florida A&M vs. Bethune-Cookman in Orlando. The Marching 100, the Rattlers' 1978 national championship legacy, and one of the great atmospheres in the sport. On the same day: Jackson State at Alcorn State in the Soul Bowl.
NOVEMBER 28 — THE BAYOU CLASSIC. Grambling State vs. Southern at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans. The 53rd annual Thanksgiving-weekend meeting. A combined 45 SWAC championships between the two programs. Southern leads the Classic series 28–24. The Human Jukebox vs. the World Famed. There is no better way to close the regular season in Black college football.
DECEMBER 12 — THE CELEBRATION BOWL. It all ends in Atlanta, where the SWAC and MEAC champions meet for the Black college national championship. The MEAC has dominated the series. The 2026 edition decides who owns the year.
A note for the newcomers: at an HBCU game, get there early and stay through halftime. The fifth quarter — the postgame band battle in the stands — is free with your ticket and worth every penny. Welcome home.
