Two people are dead after a wrong-way driver crashed into traffic on Interstate 15 in the dark hours of Friday morning, shutting down every northbound lane near the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The Nevada Highway Patrol responded to the crash around 3:22 a.m. on northbound I-15, north of mile marker 54 near the Speedway, KSNV reported. Investigators believe the crash involved two four-door sedans and a semi tractor-trailer — and that one of the sedans had been traveling southbound the wrong way in the northbound lanes. Both drivers of the sedans were confirmed dead at the scene.

What happenedThree vehicles, one going the wrong way

According to the Highway Patrol, the wrong-way sedan collided head-on with the other sedan, with the semi also caught up in the wreck. Trooper Shawn Haggstrom said in an email to KSNV that troopers responded to the report around 3:22 a.m. Friday. The driver of the semi tractor-trailer was not injured and remained at the scene with investigators, KSNV reported.

Beyond that, authorities have released little. "More will be released following a preliminary investigation," Haggstrom told KSNV in an email, and no further details — including the identities of the victims — had been disclosed. FOX5 Vegas reported the same core facts in its own account of the crash, noting the two deaths and the lane shutdowns near the Speedway, per the roadnow.com interstate news aggregator. The Las Vegas Review-Journal also confirmed the two fatalities near the Motor Speedway, according to the Spot On Nevada news index.

The closureNorthbound I-15 shut at mile marker 54

The interstate stayed closed through the morning. All northbound I-15 travel lanes were closed at mile marker 54, KSNV reported, with traffic diverted off the I-15/Speedway exit. Drivers were being routed to Las Vegas Boulevard North and then to the I-15/Apex area to continue north on I-15. It was unclear how long the northbound side of the interstate would remain closed, and by midday the Highway Patrol had not announced a reopening time. Drivers heading toward Mesquite and the Arizona line were urged to expect delays and check conditions before leaving, since the early-morning closure stacked traffic through the entire north valley corridor.

The investigationWhat troopers will be looking at

Fatal wrong-way crashes of this kind are typically investigated by the Nevada State Police Highway Patrol's Traffic Homicide Unit — the same unit the agency names in its statements on recent fatal crashes, including the June 28 crash on I-15 at mile marker 94, per FOX5's reporting on that incident. In that earlier case, the agency released details including the vehicles involved, the direction of travel, and the preliminary reconstruction, FOX5 reported — a pattern that suggests the same categories of facts will come out here once Haggstrom's promised preliminary investigation concludes.

The key questions investigators will work through are the ones the public always asks first: how the wrong-way sedan entered the northbound lanes, how long it had been traveling against traffic, and what role — if any — impairment or distraction played. In prior wrong-way cases on I-15, the Highway Patrol has said investigators consider impairment, distraction, or a medical emergency as potential factors while toxicology testing and crash reconstruction run their course. For now, none of those answers exist in the public record for this crash. That is not an omission by the reporting — the agency simply has not released them yet.

The patternA grim week on I-15 — and a known Nevada problem

This crash lands just days after another deadly one on the same interstate: a fatal crash on I-15 in Las Vegas earlier this week, reported Oct. 4. And earlier this week a fatal pedestrian crash struck northeast Las Vegas, as we reported in our coverage of the northeast valley crash.

The wrong-way problem itself is not new in Nevada. FOX5 reported in February 2026 that state Assemblyman Brian Hibbetts, pushing a bill to make wrong-way driving a criminal offense rather than a civil one, had cited dispatch data showing Las Vegas police logged 634 reports of wrong-way drivers in calendar year 2024, while the Nevada Highway Patrol answered 731 wrong-way calls in its own jurisdiction that year. The Friday-morning wreck is exactly the kind of tragedy that data was about.

What happens next is in the troopers' hands. The Highway Patrol's Traffic Homicide Unit will complete its preliminary investigation, after which Haggstrom has said more details will be released — typically the identities of the victims once next of kin are notified, and the reconstruction of how the wrong-way sedan entered the northbound lanes. The lane closure at mile marker 54 was still in effect at midday, and drivers should expect further updates from the Highway Patrol as the scene clears and the investigation moves forward.
