NEW YORK — Federal immigration agents opened fire in the Bronx on Thursday afternoon, wounding a 28-year-old man they were trying to arrest — while a 5-year-old boy sat in the back seat of his SUV.
Here's what happened, per CNN, Reuters, the NY Post, and Fox News, all reporting within the hour. Just after 4 p.m. ET, agents with ICE's Enforcement and Removal Operations — the branch that handles immigration arrests — encountered the man outside 2 Marble Hill Ave in the Marble Hill neighborhood, just north of Manhattan. Sources say the feds were targeting him; things went sideways fast, and agents fired.
Witnesses told police they heard five to six gunshots. Video from the scene shows the wounded man sitting handcuffed on the pavement, surrounded by as many as a dozen agents, some holding rifles, keeping the growing crowd back. The NY Post reports the man was shot in the neck but is expected to survive. He was conscious when taken to the hospital.
"They shot this n—– out the car, bro."— A bystander, in video from the scene posted online
The part that stops you cold: the boy. Five years old, in the back of the SUV, while federal agents fired into the vehicle. He was not physically injured. That's the sentence everyone will repeat tonight, and it should be.
Two ICE agents were also injured in the encounter and taken to the hospital. One may have been hurt in a car accident, though a federal official told CNN it's unclear whether the crash was part of the arrest or the response. The fog around that detail is typical of the first hours — and it's exactly what makes people nervous.
The NYPD wants one thing clear: they weren't involved and weren't at the scene when the shooting happened. They posted that on X, then called a mobilization for crowd control and evidence handling. By early evening, Homeland Security Investigations agents and NYPD officers were walking the block behind yellow tape while protesters started gathering.
Sources tell the Post the feds are investigating whether the wounded man is tied to a migrant moped gang connected to the shooting of an off-duty border patrol agent at Fort Washington Park last year. That's unconfirmed — treat it as a lead, not a fact.
Gov. Kathy Hochul says she's been briefed. she said in a statement: "We expect federal authorities to provide a full and transparent accounting of the circumstances surrounding this incident. New Yorkers deserve to know exactly what happened and why." CNN has reached out to DHS for comment.
