Vegas This Weekend: Golden Knights Anniversary Night, Metallica at Sphere, and UNLV Homecoming

Two Knights home games, two Metallica nights at Sphere, and a UNLV Homecoming showdown — here is what to know, where to be, and when.

The Short Version

Thursday night, this city makes you choose. At 7 p.m., the Vegas Golden Knights open a two-game homestand against the Toronto Maple Leafs at T-Mobile Arena, fresh off closing a road trip with Tuesday night's 6-2 win at Seattle. Ninety minutes later and one big black orb to the east, Metallica takes the Sphere stage at 8:30 for the second of its No Repeat Weekends — a different setlist from the one it played there Saturday. And on Saturday night, it all converges: the Knights host the L.A. Kings at 7 p.m. for "Welcome to Impossible Knight," the ninth-anniversary celebration of the first home game in franchise history, while Metallica plays night two of the weekend across town.

The momentum is real. The Knights' 6-2 win at Seattle on Tuesday night capped the road trip and sets up a homestand that has everything a Vegas hockey fan could ask for: an Original Six opponent on Thursday and a full-throated anniversary celebration on Saturday. Per the team's schedule, Thursday's game against Toronto and Saturday's against Los Angeles both start at 7 p.m. PT, confirmed by multiple schedule listings including ESPN.

Saturday: Welcome to Impossible Knight

The marquee event of the weekend is Saturday night's "Welcome to Impossible Knight," presented by Circa Sports, when the Knights host the Kings at 7 p.m. PT. The date is the point: Oct. 10 marks nine years to the day since the first home game in franchise history, played Oct. 10, 2017, and the night is the first of five Anniversary Knights of Season X, the club announced October 1.

Saturday will be the final time the Golden Knights wear their inaugural gray jerseys before the sweaters are retired from the rotation — a detail that gives the night a genuine end-of-an-era charge. The first 10,000 fans receive a commemorative puck modeled on what was given out at the franchise's first home game in 2017, NHL.com reported.

The nostalgia runs all day. The team holds an open practice Friday, Oct. 9 at 11:30 a.m. PT at City National Arena, where members of the 2017-18 team will meet fans and sign autographs. Then Saturday, before the game, Fan Fest presented by Raising Cane's takes over Paramount+ Plaza from 4 to 6 p.m. PT — free and open to the public, with a chance to hear from original-team members Pierre-Edouard Bellemare, Oscar Dansk, Cody Eakin, Deryk Engelland, Brad Hunt, James Neal and Ryan Reaves, plus first head coach Gerard Gallant, as they recount the journey from the 2017 Expansion Draft to the doorstep of a Stanley Cup, the team announced. Autographs, jersey giveaways from former players, historical artifacts from the inaugural season on display, and a raffle for game tickets round it out.

Context matters here: the 2017-18 Golden Knights remain the most successful expansion team in professional sports history, a run that carried an expansion draft cast to the Stanley Cup Final in Year One and a championship in 2022-23. Nine years later, the club says it has advanced to three Finals and is celebrating its 10th season. Saturday is for the people who were in the building — and the ones who wish they had been.

Metallica's second No Repeat Weekend at Sphere

The other half of the weekend belongs to the loudest residency on the Strip. Metallica's Life Burns Faster engagement at Sphere plays Thursday, Oct. 8 and Saturday, Oct. 10 — a No Repeat Weekend in the band's established two-night format, meaning fans attending both shows get two different programs, not the same set twice. The 8:30 p.m. start time comes from the Ticketmaster listing, and the engagement spans 24 shows through March 13, 2027, MusicTimes reported.

The October calendar pairs Thursday-Saturday dates — Oct. 1 and 3 opened the run, followed by 8 and 10, 15 and 17, 22 and 24, and 29 and 31 — with a November 5 and 7 weekend closing the 2026 portion before the run resumes in January. The band opened its Sphere residency Oct. 1 with the same two-night structure, and frontman James Hetfield has called the engagement a dream come true, BraveWords reported.

Around the shows, the band has built a full fan takeover. The Life Burns Faster Experience combines a pop-up shop and fan space at the Summit Showroom inside The Venetian Resort, near the bridge to Sphere, open 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays and 10 a.m. until after the concert on Thursdays and Saturdays, per the band's September 24 announcement reported by MusicTimes. Black Box Friday opens a memorabilia and interactive-exhibit space at The Stadium at The Palazzo on selected Fridays — the Oct. 9 edition includes a Q&A with Squindo, the artist behind much of Metallica's visual identity. Ticket buyers should stick to Ticketmaster and the band's official channels; Metallica has warned fans against unofficial offers.

Saturday afternoon: UNLV Homecoming

Before the night doubleheader, college football gets its say. UNLV hosts North Dakota State for Homecoming on Saturday at Allegiant Stadium — the Rebels' first meeting ever with the 5-0 Bison, and a matchup of two teams unbeaten in Mountain West play. Senior quarterback Jackson Arnold comes in as the Mountain West's Offensive Player of the Week and a two-time Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award honoree, as we reported Tuesday. For the full preview of the hottest quarterback in the conference, read our UNLV report here.

So here is your Vegas weekend, in order: Knights practice open house Friday morning at City National Arena, Metallica at Sphere and the Knights' anniversary night colliding Saturday evening, and a UNLV Homecoming matinee bridging the two. Thursday's only decision is hockey at 7 or Hetfield at 8:30. Saturday's is which arena gets your night — and there is no wrong answer.
