LYNCHBURG, Va. — There was no mystery to what Liberty wanted to do Thursday night, and Sam Houston knew it was coming and still couldn't stop it. The Flames ran the ball straight at the Bearkats for 277 rushing yards, scored in every quarter, and walked off Williams Stadium with a 35-3 win on ESPNU — their fourth straight victory and a 4-1 record that keeps them rolling in the right direction.
Quarterback Ethan Vasko did the heavy lifting near the goal line, punching in touchdowns from 1 yard out early in the second quarter and from 3 yards out midway through the third. Deshawn Purdie got the scoring started with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Bryce Randolph late in the first quarter, and Kam Davis opened the fourth quarter with a 3-yard touchdown run just two seconds into the period as Liberty poured on 14 points in the final frame.

It was the kind of performance that doesn't need much explaining. Liberty doubled Sam Houston's total yardage, won the first-down battle 19-10, and held the ball just under 26 minutes. And here's the stat that tells you how thoroughly the Flames controlled the line of scrimmage: they converted only twice on third down all night — 2-for-5 — because they so rarely needed a third down at all.
How the night unfolded
The Flames wasted no time. With 10:48 left in the first quarter, Purdie found Randolph for the 15-yard touchdown strike and C. Reeves' extra point made it 7-0. Vasko's 1-yard plunge at 14:15 of the second quarter doubled the lead, and Sam Houston's best moment of the night came with 19 seconds left in the half, when S. Carpenter drilled a 36-yard field goal to get the Bearkats on the board.
Any thought of a second-half rally died quickly. Vasko's second touchdown — a 3-yard run at 8:04 of the third — pushed it to 21-3, and Davis's 3-yard score two seconds into the fourth opened the floodgates for a 14-point final quarter that turned a comfortable win into a rout.
The conditions were about as good as October football gets — 68 degrees and clear at kickoff with a light 6 mph breeze — and Liberty played like a team in no hurry to leave the field. The Flames' 277 rushing yards accounted for nearly 78 percent of their 356 total yards, the kind of run-heavy dominance that keeps your own defense fresh while the other team's offense watches from the sideline. Sam Houston punted five times; Liberty needed just three punts all night, and the Bearkats never crossed midfield with any consistency after Carpenter's field goal.

A long night for the Bearkats
For Sam Houston, the box score is ugly in just about every column. The Bearkats managed 182 total yards — 68 on the ground, 114 through the air — converted 3 of 11 third downs, and punted five times. Their one scoring drive of the night ended in Carpenter's field goal; the other nine possessions went nowhere.
The loss drops Sam Houston to 1-3, and the road doesn't get friendlier. The Bearkats came into Thursday needing something positive to build on, and instead they leave Lynchburg having been outgained by 174 yards and shut out for three of four quarters. The defense that held up early simply wore down under the weight of Liberty's run game.
What it means
For Liberty, it's four straight wins and a 4-1 record with the machine humming. The Flames are 2-0 at home and unbeaten in conference play, and Thursday was the most complete performance of the streak — offense, defense, and special teams all doing their jobs. The 277 rushing yards are the headline number, but the zero turnovers thrown by the Flames (one fumble lost) and the relentless pressure on Sam Houston's backfield matter just as much.
Around Conference USA, the picture is tightening. FIU handled New Mexico State 22-3 on Wednesday night, and the league race is starting to take shape as October football settles in. Liberty has now put itself firmly in the conversation, and the way the Flames are running the football, they're going to be a problem for everyone left on the schedule. The betting window
For the record — listed odds, not advice — the market had this one pegged. TheScore's listed closing line was Liberty -13.5 with a 52.5 total, and the Flames covered with room to spare while the 38 combined points stayed comfortably under. If you laid the points, congratulations; if you took the over, the second half was a slow, painful watch.
