The blue carpet at the IFC Center got a genuine romantic-drama jolt on Wednesday night. Margaret Qualley and Aaron Pierre turned out in Manhattan for the premiere of Love of Your Life, the Prime Video romance that starts its theatrical window this week before streaming to a global audience on October 14.
NEW YORK — The co-stars posed together at the premiere on Wednesday evening (October 7) at the IFC Center in New York City, according to Just Jared, which noted the event photos. For the occasion, Qualley, 31, wore a long-sleeved black dress by Chanel, while Pierre, 32, sported a brown suede jacket over a white T-shirt paired with khakis. Director Rachel Morrison joined her stars at the premiere — a fitting full-circle moment for the filmmaker, whose film had its world premiere less than a month earlier at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 13.
The film’s official synopsis, as reported by Just Jared, centers on Maya, played by Qualley: Love of Your Life follows Maya, whose chance encounter with Charlie (Gabriel Basso) sets in motion a sweeping romance and a future beyond anything she had imagined. When that future is suddenly upended, Maya is sent hurtling toward an unexpected new life — one that will force her to reckon with who she is, what she wants, and how to love again.

The trailer fills in that shape. Per ComingSoon’s trailer breakdown, the story opens on Maya as a smart, wry nurse who puts her belongings in two suitcases, throws her phone away, and walks out of her old life toward Europe. Over the decade that follows, she falls in love with Charlie — and then, after her life takes an unexpected turn, with Felix, played by Pierre. The trailer also shows the life she left behind catching up to her, with Schwarzenegger’s Jason scolding her for disappearing on her friends and family. Qualley, the Emmy-nominated star of Maid, anchors a love story that the early coverage describes as a character study first and a romance second.
That assessment tracks with the first reviews. Collider reviewed the film out of TIFF and framed it as a globe-trotting drama — its headline likening the film’s grief-and-romance structure to an “Eat, Grieve, Love.” The review praised Qualley for what it called a “restrained, deeply felt performance” that keeps Maya’s grief grounded. It also praised Morrison for making the globe-trotting journey visually rich without overplaying the emotion, and credited the film with giving romance, friendship, and chosen family equal emotional weight. The A.V. Club, in its review, called it a refreshingly grown-up romance in a genre increasingly dominated by teen stories, noting that Morrison — herself an Oscar-nominated cinematographer — shot the film with DP Todd Banhazl across gorgeously dreamy montages of Portugal, London, Tokyo, and New Orleans.

Behind the camera, the film’s lineage is notable. It was written by Julia Cox and produced by Ryan Gosling and Jessie Henderson, per ComingSoon, and distributed by Amazon MGM Studios. Morrison, directing a screenplay she did not write, brings a cinematographer’s sensibility to material the A.V. Club wrote was “more of a character study of Maya than anything else” — the title referring both to the youthful optimism of finding one’s great love and the idea that you have to learn to love your own life, tragedies and ecstasies alike. At 106 minutes, it is a tight, fall-window romance built for the exact audience Prime Video has been courting: grown-ups who still want movies made for them.
The ensemble rounds out a cast of rising and established names: alongside Qualley, Pierre, and Basso, the film stars Patrick Schwarzenegger, Catherine Keener, Tamara Lawrance, and Corey Johnson. For Pierre, the year has been a breakout stretch — the Mufasa and Lanterns actor now leads a prestige romance opposite one of the most in-demand actresses of her generation. For Qualley, it continues a run of auteur-adjacent choices since Maid and Kinds of Kindness, and it keeps her firmly in the festival-prestige lane even as the film’s real audience will be the streaming crowd.

The release pattern is the now-standard streamer straddle: a limited theatrical run starting October 7 gives the film qualifying runs and a press window, while the October 14 global Prime Video date is where the audience actually lives. With a stacked fall calendar — see our Lupin Part 4 preview and Brand New Day’s record-setting digital bow — Love of Your Life is betting that a smart, adult romance can still cut through the noise. Wednesday’s premiere suggests the cast, at least, is ready for the spotlight.
