There are expos for everything — cars, comics, real estate, sneakers you'll never wear. But for years, there was nothing like this for your mind. Charlamagne Tha God noticed, and instead of just talking about it on the radio, he built it. Today, the 6th Annual Mental Wealth Expo takes over the New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark, and thousands of people are walking through the doors to get something most of them have never been offered for free: real help.
Here's the thing that makes this different from every "awareness" campaign you've ever scrolled past. The expo isn't a hashtag. It's a building full of actual mental health professionals — therapists, psychiatrists, spiritual leaders — running breakout rooms on anxiety, depression, PTSD, kids and teen mental health, LGBTQ+ mental health, healing through food, and meditation and yoga. You walk in carrying whatever you've been carrying, and you walk out with names, numbers, and a starting point. As Charlamagne put it: "People are always telling folks to do the work. Well what does that look like? Where do you start? The Mental Wealth Expo will be the beginning of that process for so many."
The "where do you start" part is the whole ballgame. The biggest barrier to mental health care has never been willingness — it's access. Cost, stigma, not knowing who to call, calling and getting a six-month waitlist. The expo attacks all of it at once, and the price of admission is zero. That's not a marketing hook. That's the mission. The Mental Wealth Alliance, which Charlamagne launched in 2020 with a focus on expanding care for Black communities, treats free access as the point, not the perk.
The lineup tells you how seriously they take it. Iyanla Vanzant — the woman who has talked more people through their pain on television than just about anyone alive — is there. So are Dr. Julius Thomas, Kier Gaines, and Dr. Marc Brackett, each bringing a different lane of healing and expertise. Running point alongside Charlamagne is Devi Brown, the alliance's president, who has framed the expo as a commitment to making mental health education and support free, accessible, and rooted in community. This isn't a panel of celebrities giving vague advice. It's practitioners doing the work, in the room, with the people.
And none of this is new for Charlamagne — it's personal. He put his own anxiety struggles on the record years ago with his book Shook One: Anxiety Playing Tricks on Me, back when a Black man from South Carolina talking openly about therapy on hip-hop radio was still a radical act. He caught heat for it in some corners. He kept going anyway. Six years later, the expo is in its sixth year, the alliance is a real institution, and the conversation he helped force open is one of the most important in the culture. The Breakfast Club connection runs deep — iHeartMedia New York has been producing and promoting the event across its stations — because this was never a side project. It's the work.
We're not hosting it — that's Charlamagne, Devi, and the alliance's day, and they've earned it. But we're celebrating it. If you've ever told someone "you should talk to somebody" — or if you've ever needed to hear it yourself — today is the day. This is what doing the work looks like. It looks like a free room in Newark full of people who showed up for themselves.
The Take: Every year, brands slap a green ribbon on their logo for a day and call it advocacy. Charlamagne built an institution instead — six years, free entry, real clinicians, real outcomes. The expo doesn't ask for your attention. It offers you a way forward. That's the difference between awareness and access, and it's why today matters.
