October is doing what October does in music: stacking the calendar. This week brings a one-night-only Ray Charles centennial concert in Columbus, a new Greta Van Fleet album landing on Friday, and the full 2027 lineup for Gulf Coast Jam. Here’s the rundown — what’s announced, what’s dropping, and what’s worth your attention.
The Genius of Ray Charles, one night only
Columbus’s Palace Theatre turns 100 this year, and it’s marking the occasion by bringing Ray Charles’ music back to a stage where he performed throughout his career. Palace 100: The Genius of Ray Charles takes over the downtown theatre at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, November 14 — a one-night-only concert announced by CAPA, the Columbus arts organization behind the venue. The lineup is deliberately cross-genre, the way Charles himself was: country artist Jackson Dean and jazz trumpeter Etienne Charles join Grammy-winning R&B and jazz vocalist Patti Austin, multiplatinum singer-songwriter Aloe Blacc, Grammy-nominated gospel singer-songwriter Blessing Offor, Grammy and Academy Award-winning singer Lisa Fischer, Grammy-nominated singer Monica Mancini, and Columbus native Billy Valentine. Spanning R&B, jazz, gospel, country and contemporary music, the bill mirrors the range of styles Charles explored across his career.
The people behind the night have their own Charles connections. Paul Shaffer — David Letterman’s longtime musical director and bandleader — hosts the evening; he performed with Charles on Saturday Night Live and Late Night with David Letterman. The concert is produced by Grammy and Emmy recipient Gregg Field, a music producer and former drummer for Ray Charles. Etienne Charles, the trumpeter on the bill, is a Guggenheim Fellow known for blending jazz with Afro-Caribbean musical traditions. That’s the difference between a tribute and a jukebox: the people on stage carry the music from the inside.
A centenary, a catalogue, a full circle
The Palace’s centenary programming is doing something smart: rather than a generic birthday concert, it’s using the milestone to reconnect the room with its own history. Bringing Charles’ music back to a stage he played throughout his career turns the anniversary into a lineage — the same boards, a new century, the same songs. The genre-spanning bill is the thesis: Charles moved between R&B, jazz, gospel, country and pop without asking permission, and a tribute that fenced him into one lane would miss the point of the man. Country, jazz, gospel and contemporary singers sharing one stage is the closest a single night can get to the real thing.
Friday’s drop: Greta Van Fleet
Greta Van Fleet’s Palace For The People arrives Friday, October 9, via Republic Records — one of the most-watched rock releases on this week’s New Music Friday index, which lists 56 albums and EPs landing on the 9th. Music journalist Alan Cross’s fall-albums rundown has the record locked for the same date. The band has spent the decade carrying the torch for big-room, riff-driven rock, and a new album from them is an automatic event for the guitar crowd. Friday’s calendar is stacked across genres, but Palace For The People is the one rock fans will be arguing about by Monday morning.
The title alone invites the obvious reading — a band built for big stages writing for the people in the cheap seats — but the tracklist does the talking on Friday. Republic has the album listed for October 9, and a band with this live reputation won’t keep the new songs studio-bound for long.
Gulf Coast Jam 2027 is set
Country fans can start planning now: the 2027 Gulf Coast Jam has revealed its full lineup for June 3–6 at Frank Brown Park in Panama City Beach, Florida. Jason Aldean, Luke Bryan, Zach Top and Bailey Zimmerman top the bill for the 15th annual festival, with direct support from Warren Zeiders, Jon Pardi, Tucker Wetmore and Ty Myers. The undercard runs deep — Graham Barham, Laci Kaye Booth, Dylan Marlowe, Chase Matthew, Myles Morgan, Ian Munsick, Carly Pearce and Emily Ann Roberts — plus a new partnership with Nashville’s Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge bringing four of the venue’s most popular acts to the beach. The independently owned festival draws 25,000 to 30,000 fans from all 50 states and 13 foreign countries, and organizers say last year’s edition contributed $32 million in economic impact. “This lineup includes some of the heaviest hitters in music,” executive producer Randy Lovelady said. “From established artists to the top new artists in the business, we have something for all of our Jammers!”
Tickets are moving now: general admission, college, first responder and military tiers are on sale, with elevated options from Caymus Premium Standing to Side Stage, and payment plans available across pass levels. Hotel and ticket packages are available too — the festival’s pitch is a full long-weekend operation, not just a show. Looking further down the fall calendar, Alan Cross’s rundown has October 23 bringing Tony Iommi’s From the Dark and a 20th-anniversary edition of My Chemical Romance’s The Black Parade, with Nickelback’s Everything Under the Sun landing October 30. The release calendar isn’t slowing down.
On Previously this week
The music desk has been busy. Yung Miami announced her debut solo album Watch Dis for October 23 with two new singles, and Offset announced his new album GMFU for the very same day — October 23 is shaping up as hip-hop’s biggest Friday of the fall. Robbie Williams was named Album Icon for National Album Day 2026, Primavera Sound revealed its 25th-anniversary lineup, and Metallica’s Sphere residency launched in Las Vegas. More as the week unfolds.
