"I Got Fired Off It Today": Newlyweds Co-Creator Gail Lerner Out as Showrunner Two Weeks Before Premiere

The NBC sitcom she built with Jamie Lee Curtis premieres Oct. 23. She found out Friday she's not running it anymore — and she told everyone herself, on Instagram.

The Short Version

Most showrunner firings arrive via a terse statement from a network publicist and three days of blind items. Gail Lerner did it herself, on Instagram, on a Friday, with the warmth of someone announcing a birth and the subtext of someone settling a score. "Here's the good news: I couldn't be more proud of the new sitcom Newlyweds that I created with the singular Jamie Lee Curtis. Premieres 10/23! Here's the bad news: I got fired off it today."

The reason, she wrote, was "creative differences" — the two most overworked words in Hollywood, covering everything from genuine artistic disputes to palace intrigue. An NBC spokesperson confirmed to TheWrap that creative differences led to Lerner's exit but declined to say more. Whatever happened, it happened fast: two weeks before premiere, with episode 8 already filming.

What she built

Newlyweds was supposed to be a particular kind of bet. It's a multi-camera sitcom — the old-school format, laugh track and all — starring Téa Leoni as Jeanie, a free-spirited woman, and Tim Daly as James, a buttoned-up professor, who marry impulsively after a whirlwind courtship and then have to figure out how to actually live together. Leoni and Daly are married in real life, which is either perfect casting or a dare. Curtis, who co-created the show with Lerner, has been its loudest evangelist, arguing that broadcast sitcoms are what real people want and — her words from an August panel — what they can watch "for free," pointing to the cost of cable and streaming.

The supporting cast: Al Madrigal, Emma Meisel, Ignacio Diaz-Silverio and Bill O'Neill. Pamela Fryman directed the pilot. It's one of only two comedies NBC ordered for the 2026-27 season — the other, Sunset P.I., doesn't arrive until midseason. In other words, this is NBC's entire fall comedy slate, and it just lost its showrunner.

The gracious exit (with teeth)

Read Lerner's full post and it's a masterclass in leaving loudly while smiling. She praised the cast, crew and writers as "unparalleled." She said the first six episodes — made under her leadership — she "wouldn't change a thing." She predicted the show will be "a barn burner" and told fans to watch the first six "and beyond," adding: "If you like them, please let me know! If you don't, keep it to yourself."

Then the kicker, quoting a friend: "better to die on your feet than live on your knees." Signed: "Love from your friend on her feet."

That's not a woman who thinks she failed. That's a woman who thinks she was right and wants the record to show it. And honestly? Announcing your own firing before the trades can frame it is one of the savviest moves available. She owned the story in one Instagram post. NBC's confirmation to TheWrap — two sentences, no further comment — reads like a network that knows it lost the narrative before the news cycle started.

What happens now

The practical fallout is contained, at least on paper. The show had a hiatus already scheduled for next week; that break now becomes a showrunner search. Filming on episode 8 continues. The Oct. 23 premiere doesn't move. Curtis — co-creator, executive producer, recurring guest star — stays, which gives the show continuity at the top even without Lerner.

But showrunner changes two weeks before launch are never nothing. The first six episodes are Lerner's; everything after is someone else's, and audiences can usually feel the seam. The question for NBC is whether Newlyweds arrives as the confident multi-cam revival Curtis has been preaching about, or as a show that spent its launch window explaining itself. With the entire fall comedy slate riding on it, the stakes are higher than a typical showrunner swap.

Lerner's résumé — Black-ish, Will & Grace, Happy Endings, Ugly Betty — means she'll work again immediately. She was a co-executive producer on Black-ish during its absolute peak years and has been one of the most reliable comedy writers in television for two decades running now. In this town, getting fired off your own show two weeks before premiere is either a career wound or an origin story. The Instagram post made pretty clear which one she's choosing.
