NHL Sunday: Granlund's OT Winner Caps a Five-Game Night as Barkov Lands on LTIR

Mikael Granlund's power-play strike 46 seconds into overtime lifted Anaheim past Florida, Kyle Connor's two power-play goals carried Winnipeg, and Seattle hung another 6-1 rout on Calgary — while the Panthers lost their captain for at least 10 games.

— Mikael Granlund needed just 46 seconds of overtime to win it for Anaheim, Kyle Connor kept his torrid start rolling in Winnipeg, and Seattle hung a second straight 6-1 rout on Calgary. Across a five-game Sunday night, the hockey was the easy part — the harder news came off the ice, where Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov landed on long-term injured reserve.

Ducks 3, Panthers 2 (OT): Granlund ends it in a hurry

Mikael Granlund needed just 46 seconds of overtime. The veteran forward tipped Leo Carlsson's pass from the right corner past Jacob Markstrom on the power play, giving the Anaheim Ducks a 3-2 win over the Florida Panthers and their first home victory of the season.

All three Ducks goals came with the man advantage. Cutter Gauthier scored twice and added an assist, Carlsson finished with three assists, and Lukas Dostal made 29 saves. For Florida, Carter Verhaeghe scored and Brad Marchand — playing his first game since August surgery, weeks ahead of his expected return — found the net in his season debut. The Panthers have now gone past regulation in all three games to open the season, and they're 0-2-1 for it.

Jets 3, Red Wings 2: Connor's power-play show

Kyle Connor scored two power-play goals and added an assist to lift the Winnipeg Jets past the Detroit Red Wings 3-2 for their first win of the season. Cole Perfetti had a goal and two assists, Josh Morrissey added two helpers, and Stuart Skinner made 33 saves. Two nights after extending his NHL-record season-opener goal streak to nine straight in Friday's overtime loss to Boston, Connor just kept scoring.

Viktor Arvidsson and Emmitt Finnie scored for Detroit, and John Gibson stopped 24 shots. The Red Wings played without Dylan Larkin and Marco Kasper, both sidelined with upper-body injuries — and Larkin's absence is about far more than one game. The former Detroit captain has requested a trade, and his name now sits alongside Connor Hellebuyck's atop the league's rumor mill.

Kraken 6, Flames 1: déjà vu in Seattle

Mackie Samoskevich scored twice and Berkly Catton had a goal and an assist as the Seattle Kraken routed the Calgary Flames 6-1 in their home opener — the identical score from Thursday's season opener in Calgary. Bobby McMann, Shane Wright and Jordan Eberle also scored, Chandler Stephenson and Brandon Montour each had two assists, and Joey Daccord made 32 saves.

Morgan Frost's third-period power-play goal spoiled Daccord's shutout bid, and Dustin Wolf stopped 21 of 27 shots for Calgary. The Flames are 0-3-0 and have been outscored 16-3 through three games — a rough start by any measure, and the kind that gets a fan base checking the calendar for the trade deadline.

The other two finals

Golden Knights 3, Canucks 2: Marc Gatcomb scored just 34 seconds after Jonathan Lekkerimaki tied it, restoring Vegas's lead late in the second period. Mitch Marner and Victor Olofsson also scored, and Adin Hill made 18 saves in his first start of the season as the Golden Knights bounced back from Friday's loss in Anaheim. Paul Cotter scored his fourth goal in four games for Vancouver; Kevin Lankinen made 25 saves. Read our full recap.

Rangers 4, Mammoth 2: Gabe Perreault's tiebreaker 3:15 into the third period keyed a three-goal frame at Madison Square Garden, and Igor Shesterkin made 28 saves — plus an assist, giving him points in back-to-back starts days after scoring his first NHL goal. It's the Rangers' third straight win, and they're 3-1-0. Utah's Clayton Keller extended his regular-season point streak to 13 games. Read our full recap.

Injury report: Barkov to LTIR headlines a rough week

The Panthers placed captain Aleksander Barkov on long-term injured reserve Saturday with a lower-body injury, sidelining him for at least 10 games and 24 days. Barkov went down awkwardly in the second period of Thursday's 4-3 overtime loss at San Jose, falling on his left leg during a board battle. He'll be evaluated by a doctor Monday; ESPN reported optimism within the organization that the injury is not season-ending. The 31-year-old missed all of last season after tearing the ACL and MCL in his right knee on the first day of training camp. “It's not related to his injury last year at all,” coach Paul Maurice said. “We don't even know the extent of it yet, so it doesn't feel anything like last year. We've been through it, so we'll just deal with it.”

Florida's blue line is hurting too: Gustav Forsling (upper body) was a late scratch Thursday and a game-time decision Sunday, and Jonah Gadjovich is on LTIR after November neck surgery. The one bright spot in Sunrise is Marchand — back weeks early and already scoring.

In Ottawa, Jake Sanderson reaggravated an undisclosed injury and left Saturday's 3-2 win at Toronto at 12:45 of the first period. “A little bit concerned,” coach Travis Green said. “I think Sanderson was smart enough to pull himself early enough that he didn't reaggravate it too badly.” The Senators visit Boston on Monday.

Edmonton can't catch a break: Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (lower body) and Zach Hyman are each out roughly two weeks, Frederik Andersen is sidelined until December with the knee injury that ended his playoff run, and Matt Savoie and Alex Regula are on LTIR. The Oilers are 2-0-1 anyway, riding Connor McDavid's nine points and Evan Bouchard's eight.

Elsewhere: Montreal's Alexandre Carrier left Friday's game against Pittsburgh in the second period after his head and neck hit the boards in a tangle with Egor Chinakhov — ruled out with an undisclosed injury. Dallas placed Matt Duchene on IR after a setback (eligible to return Oct. 25), and Minnesota's Brock Faber underwent surgery for a skull fracture.

Trade watch

Hovering over everything: the Hellebuyck holdout in Winnipeg and Dylan Larkin's trade request in Detroit. A suspended three-time Vezina winner with no timeline for a deal, and a former captain sitting out while his future gets decided — the season's first real drama is playing out in GM offices, not on the ice. Our full breakdown of both standoffs.
