Crosby vs. Ovechkin on TNT: Wednesday’s 3-Game NHL Slate Headlined by a 20-Year Rivalry

Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin renew their two-decade rivalry Wednesday night when the Penguins visit the Capitals on TNT — one of three games headlined by an early Central Division heavyweight fight and a Pacific nightcap.

The rivalry that has defined a generation of hockey takes center stage Wednesday night. When the Pittsburgh Penguins visit the Washington Capitals at 7:30 p.m. ET on TNT and HBO Max, Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin will renew a duel that has been running for more than two decades — and fittingly, both captains are still looking for their first goal of the new season.

It is a three-game Wednesday slate in week one of the 2026-27 NHL season — small enough to take in all at once, big enough to set some early tones. Tuesday’s nine-game slate set the table, capped by the Vegas Golden Knights’ 6-2 rout in Seattle. Here is what to watch on Wednesday night, with all standings as of October 6.

NHL · Wednesday 7:30pm ET · TNT/HBO MaxPenguins @ Capitals — Crosby vs. Ovechkin, two decades on

Crosby and Ovechkin entered the league together in 2005-06 and have been each other’s measuring stick ever since — MVP races, playoff duels, record chases, and two of the most decorated resumes in the sport’s history. More than twenty years later, the headliner still sells itself: the game’s most enduring one-on-one rivalry, under the national lights, with both captains chasing their first goals of the season.

Pittsburgh arrives in Washington with the hotter start. The Penguins have won two straight and scored 13 goals in the process, and it is longtime running mate Evgeni Malkin — not Crosby — pacing the early attack with four points (two goals, two assists). Crosby has two assists and is still hunting his first goal, a number that will not stay that way for long.

Washington has been the weekend’s Jekyll and Hyde. The Capitals dominated the defending Stanley Cup champion Carolina Hurricanes 5-2 on Friday, then dropped a 3-1 decision at the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday. Ovechkin, like Crosby, is seeking his first goal of the campaign — and there is no stage he has historically enjoyed more than this one.

One more name to watch in a Washington sweater: Alex Tuch. Traded to the Capitals and signed to an eight-year deal in the offseason, Tuch scored twice in the season opener and is expected to be a huge part of the offense this season. A fast start from the newcomer would go a long way toward defining what this Washington team is.

Two decades of measuring-stick hockey is what separates this one from an ordinary October game. Crosby and Ovechkin entered the league together in 2005-06 and have defined each other ever since — MVP races, playoff duels, record chases, two of the most decorated résumés in the sport’s history. That both captains are still hunting their first goals of the season only sharpens the storyline: the national lights of TNT and HBO Max, the game’s most enduring one-on-one rivalry, and a first goal that feels overdue for both men. Pittsburgh brings the hotter start — two straight wins, 13 goals, Malkin pacing the attack with four points while Crosby hunts his first — but Washington has already shown both extremes, from the 5-2 handling of the defending champion Hurricanes to the flat 3-1 loss in Tampa. Tuch, the offseason addition with two goals in the opener on a new eight-year deal, is the X-factor that could tilt a night like this.

NHL · Wednesday 7:30pm ETAvalanche @ Jets — early Central Division heavyweight meeting

At the same time the rivalry show takes over TNT, the two hottest teams in the West meet in Winnipeg. Colorado is 2-0-0 with a +9 goal differential — the most lopsided start in the league through the season’s first week — while the Jets are 2-0-1 and sitting right behind them in the early Central Division picture.

It is October, not April, and nobody in either room will treat this as anything more than an early tone-setter. But tone-setters matter: these are the two teams that look like the class of the Central right now, and Wednesday is the first head-to-head data point of a long season. Expect the pace to be playoff-adjacent even if the stakes are not — neither side wants to give ground in a division race that figures to be decided by inches.

The numbers say this is the West’s early class picture. Colorado sits 2-0-0 with a +9 goal differential — the most lopsided start in the league through the first week — and Winnipeg is right behind at 2-0-1 in the early Central Division picture. Nobody will treat an October game like April, and nobody should: but the first head-to-head data point of a long season still matters, and neither side wants to concede ground in a division race that figures to be decided by inches. Playoff-adjacent pace is the expectation, even if the stakes are not — tone-setters have a way of echoing in March.

NHL · Wednesday 10pm ETOilers @ Ducks — Pacific nightcap

The night closes in Anaheim, where the Edmonton Oilers (2-0-1) visit the Anaheim Ducks (2-0-0) at 10 p.m. ET. Both teams are unbeaten in regulation to open the season, and the Pacific Division has rarely looked this open this early — a road win for Edmonton would plant an early flag, while Anaheim can announce itself as more than an October story.

The Pacific nightcap carries real early-season stakes precisely because both teams are unbeaten in regulation — Edmonton at 2-0-1, Anaheim at 2-0-0 — and the division has rarely looked this open this early. For the Oilers, a road win plants an early flag in a division that is suddenly there for the taking; for the Ducks, the opportunity is to announce themselves as more than an October story, the kind of result that makes the rest of the conference recalibrate. The 10 p.m. ET start means it closes the night alone on the slate, with the early standings giving both teams something to protect.

Wednesday’s slate is small but loud: a rivalry twenty years in the making on national television, a Central showdown between the two hottest teams in the West, and a Pacific nightcap with real early-season stakes. See all of the league’s coverage on the NHL page.
