Wednesday night television just got its spine back. After a long summer, NBC's One Chicago franchise returns tonight — all three shows, back to back, starting at 8 p.m. ET — and the cast spent today celebrating the only way New York knows how: 86 stories above the city, posing on top of the Empire State Building with King Kong. Tonight is the payoff.
The premiere-day photo op had a representative from each corner of the franchise: Taylor Kinney (Kelly Severide on Chicago Fire), Darren Barnet (Dr. John Frost on Chicago Med) and Marina Squerciati — Kim Burgess herself, Chicago P.D.'s day-one stalwart — striking poses at the observatory. The Empire State Building's official Instagram account said in its caption: "The cast of One Chicago visited the Empire State Building Observation Deck ahead of Chicago Med, Fire and P.D.'s premiere on NBC tonight." Squerciati, who has played Burgess since the show's inception in 2014, arrived in a gold satin top tucked into a brown leather jacket, with a chunky burgundy belt matched to her heels and her lipstick — premiere-day energy, fully dialed in. Squerciati wrote on social media: "Detective Burgess reporting for duty tomorrow for the season premiere of Chicago P.D.!"

Here's your night, in order. At 8 p.m. ET, Chicago Med opens Season 12 with Shots Fired, and the title isn't subtle. A few months have passed in-universe, and board member Miranda Lewis is coming for director Sharon Goodwin after she allegedly leaked a doctor's personal psychiatric files — which means Gaffney without Goodwin is a real possibility tonight. Meanwhile, Hannah Asher returns to the ED to decide whether she's ready to come back after maternity leave, now raising a child with Dr. Dean Archer — who, recall, has confessed his love for her. That's a lot of emotional triage before the first commercial break. The Med ensemble this season: Steven Weber, Jessy Schram, Luke Mitchell, Sarah Ramos, Darren Barnet, with S. Epatha Merkerson and Oliver Platt.
At 9 p.m. ET, Chicago Fire Season 15 picks up the most harrowing cliffhanger of the three: last we saw Firehouse 51, most of the crew were trapped in a burning building, some on a ladder outside, as a wave of fire consumed them. The premiere, titled New Blood, plays with time — starting where the finale left off, then jumping three months ahead to reveal who made it out alive. Hanako Greensmith, who plays Violet Mikami, said ahead of the premiere: "We put fear there for a reason." Early Season 15 also brings real goodbyes: Dermot Mulroney wraps his run as ex-battalion chief Dom Pascal in the opener, and original cast member Joe Miñoso — firefighter Joe Cruz, one of the show's cornerstones — leaves after a handful of episodes in what Greensmith describes as a beautiful story. The Season 15 regulars: Taylor Kinney, David Eigenberg, Joe Miñoso, Dermot Mulroney, Christian Stolte, Miranda Rae Mayo, Hanako Greensmith, Jocelyn Hudon, Brandon Larracuente and Da'Vinchi.

At 10 p.m. ET, Chicago P.D. Season 14 begins with Demolition, and it's carrying the heaviest emotional baggage of the night. Officer Eva Imani's storyline reaches its reckoning: she was reunited with her sister Shari, who was taken as a young girl by a sex trafficker — and it left Sgt. Hank Voight with an impossible decision, whether to turn Shari in for a murder she committed. The premiere, set three months later, reveals whether he does. Jason Beghe told NBC Insider the theme for Season 14 is reinvention — the Intelligence Unit navigating a brand new world in policing, with difficult decisions and lingering consequences. The P.D. regulars: Jason Beghe, Marina Squerciati, Patrick John Flueger, LaRoyce Hawkins, Benjamin Levy Aguilar, Arienne Mandi and Amy Morton. And USA Today is already reporting that a longtime star exits this season — which means tonight's premiere deserves very close watching.
Behind the camera, the word of the season is change. TV Guide spoke with the three showrunners — Allen MacDonald on Med, Victor Teran on Fire and Gwen Sigan on P.D. — and the shared theme is evolution: for three shows going into their 12th, 15th and 14th seasons, the only way to thrive is to stop standing still. Dick Wolf's Wolf Entertainment machine, with Universal Television, is betting that the franchise's deep bench of characters can carry one more reinvention. Given that these three shows have anchored NBC Wednesdays for over a decade, it's a reasonable bet.

It helps to step back and appreciate how unusual this night actually is. Three scripted shows in their 12th, 14th and 15th seasons, airing as one contiguous three-hour block, all premiering the same night — nobody else on network television is pulling that off. Fire has anchored the block since 2012, P.D. since 2014, Med since 2015, and the franchise has occasionally played with the formula: earlier this year a #OneChicago crossover event reshuffled the order entirely, with Fire kicking things off at 8, Med at 9 and P.D. closing at 10. Tonight returns to the classic order, which after all these years feels less like habit and more like ritual.
New episodes stream the next day on Peacock, if tonight doesn't work. But tonight is the night the Empire State Building lit up for, the night Squerciati got dressed up for, the night Dick Wolf's Chicago finally comes back. Clear your Wednesday — premieres are the theme of the week, but this three-hour block is the main event.
