The biggest gaming convention in the Southern Hemisphere opens its doors this Friday. PAX Aus 2026 runs October 9 through Sunday, October 11 at the Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre, with the expo hall open from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM each day — and this year, the floor belongs to Nintendo. More than 85,000 attendees came through the doors in 2025, and the 2026 lineup suggests the show is determined to grow that number: playable hands-on time with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 weeks before launch, a showcase for the final chapter of the Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy, and a World of Warcraft keynote to open the weekend.
Nintendo is the biggest name on the 2026 expo floor, bringing one of its largest-ever Australian showcases for the Nintendo Switch 2. The headline act is Nintendo Switch Sports Resort, which will be playable in Australia for the first time — weeks ahead of its October 22, 2026 launch. But that's only the start of the booth. Nintendo's confirmed lineup also includes Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave, Pokémon Pokopia Expansion Pass, Splatoon Raiders, Star Fox, Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza. Partner games on the stand run the gamut from Orbitals and 007 First Light to the ELDEN RING Tarnished Edition, Minecraft for Nintendo Switch 2, Minecraft Dungeons II, Diablo IV: Age of Hatred Collection, Metaphor: ReFantazio, Dragon's Dogma II: Dark Arisen, Monster Hunter Wilds and FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE.
There's a mobile twist on the show floor too. An exclusive Pikmin Bloom event will run throughout the convention — Australia's first convention AR photo activation, with special Decor Pikmin to collect. It's the kind of booth-adjacent experience that gives the floor something to do between demo lines.

The keynote stage has its own heavy hitters. World of Warcraft Executive Producer Holly Longdale opens the show with the Storytime keynote, reflecting on two decades in the industry and the Warcraft universe. She'll be joined on stage by Associate Production Director Clay Stone for a behind-the-scenes look at World of Warcraft: Forever — including an exclusive dungeon deep dive — while attendees at the booth get hands-on beta time, photo opportunities and a "Raid for Riches" quest card. World of Warcraft: Forever is dated November 4, 2026 on PC, making this the last public hands-on before it ships. Longdale shares the Storytime stage with two more marquee guests: DOOM composer Mick Gordon and SAROS game director Gregory Louden.
Activision, meanwhile, is bringing the show's biggest playable blockbuster. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 will be playable on the show floor — a selection of its multiplayer modes, weeks ahead of the game's global launch on October 23, 2026. It's rated MA 15+, so plan accordingly. For anyone weighing a day-one purchase, this is about as close to a public trial run as Modern Warfare 4 is going to get before release.

SEGA is countering with four playable titles of its own. Alien: Isolation 2, Persona 4 Revival and Stranger Than Heaven will all be on the floor, joined by Total War: WARHAMMER 40,000 — where attendees can command the Space Marines across three gameplay scenarios in the Total War booth. It's a deliberately varied slate: horror, RPG remake, action, and grand strategy all within a few steps of each other.
Square Enix returns with FINAL FANTASY XIV Online, offering playable Nintendo Switch 2 gameplay on the floor alongside a bracelet-making activity and a themed photo opportunity. The studio is also running a developer panel, "A Realm Reburned," with Localisation Director Michael-Christopher Koji Fox and Global Community Producer Toshio 'Foxclon' Murouchi — a session promising behind-the-scenes stories plus a hot sauce challenge. But the real draw may be the showcase for Final Fantasy VII Revelation, the conclusion of the FFVII remake trilogy, presented ahead of its April 8, 2027 release. With roughly six months to go, expect this showcase to be one of the weekend's most dissected moments.
The indie floor is where PAX Aus has always quietly excelled, and 2026 is no exception. PAX Rising showcases the next lineup of potential indie hits, with more than 90 games playable across the Aus Indie Showcase, PAX Rising and New Zealand's Centre of Digital Excellence (CODE). Australia's indie scene has real receipts here — recent breakout success stories include Cult of the Lamb, Hollow Knight and Big Walk — so the Rising floor is genuinely where tomorrow's hits get their first Australian audience.

Bandai Namco is confirmed with the Australian playable debut of Dragon Ball Xenoverse 3, ahead of the game's planned 2027 release — another first-on-Australian-soil demo for the weekend. One conspicuous unknown: Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto VI. There is no word yet whether the studio is making an appearance at all, which means the industry's biggest release gets to hover over the show as a ghost.

The timing makes sense when you look at who games in Australia. According to the Interactive Games & Entertainment Association, 82% of Australians play video games — the average player is 35 years old, and women make up 51% of the country's gaming audience. This is a mainstream national pastime, and PAX Aus is its annual convention. For anyone still deciding: early-bird pricing is AU$185 for a three-day pass or AU$77 for a single day, and the doors open at 10:00 AM on Friday.
