LOS ANGELES — October’s PlayStation Plus monthly games — F1 25, Hunt: Showdown 1896, and Earth Defense Force: World Brothers 2 — have been claimable since Tuesday, and if you haven’t grabbed them yet, go do that first. But the more urgent subscription news this week is on the other end of the library: eight games are leaving PS Plus on October 20, headlined by Silent Hill 2, while nine games leave Xbox Game Pass on October 15 — including Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, last year’s Game of the Year winner. Two libraries, two exit dates, and a whole lot of “I’ll get to it eventually” about to become “I should have played it when it was free.”
The PS Plus side broke via the service’s “Last Chance to Play” section, spotted by PlayStation Lifestyle and reported by Insider Gaming. The Game Pass list surfaced through the Xbox app, via IdleSloth84_, and was rounded up by Khel Now. Neither company exactly trumpets its departures — that’s what the Last Chance section is for — so consider this your trumpet.
For context on the month: September’s PS Plus Essential lineup — Sniper Elite Resistance, MLB The Show 26, Wobbly Life, and Chained Echoes, per NME — closed its claim window on October 5, while Extra and Premium members got RuneScape: Dragonwilds, Ball x Pit, and more. October’s trio skews toward the multiplayer crowd: EA’s Formula 1 racer, Crytek’s tense extraction shooter, and a voxel-style co-op bug-blaster. A solid month — but not the story.

Last callSilent Hill 2 heads out October 20
Start with the big one. Silent Hill 2 — Bloober Team’s remake of the 2001 psychological horror landmark, and one of the best-reviewed games of 2024 — leaves the PS Plus Game Catalog on October 20. The timing stings a little extra: Silent Hill: Townfall arrives later this month, per Insider Gaming, which makes right now the ideal moment for a refresher trip to that foggy town. If it’s been sitting in your backlog, the backlog is about to make the decision for you.
It’s not alone. Also departing October 20: Yakuza: Like a Dragon — the turn-based reinvention of Sega’s crime saga and an easy 60-hour recommendation — plus Jurassic World Evolution 2, the co-op puzzler Death Squared, the roguelike Rogue Lords, Gloomhaven Mercenaries Edition, Harvest Moon: Light of Hope Special Edition, and the quietly lovely Lake. That’s a genuinely strong month of exits; the catalog team clearly decided October needed some shelf space.

Nine moreGame Pass says goodbye to a GOTY winner
Over on Xbox, the headline departure hurts more. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 — the French turn-based RPG that swept the most awards at The Game Awards 2025 — leaves Game Pass on October 15. If you haven’t played it, this is the one the entire internet will judge you for missing; a painterly, devastating, genuinely original RPG that reminded a lot of people why they fell in love with the genre. Eight days. That’s what’s left.
The rest of the October 15 Game Pass exits: A Plague Tale: Requiem — Asobo’s gorgeous, grim rat-plague sequel and arguably the second-biggest loss on the list — plus Pacific Drive, The Casting of Frank Stone, Crime Scene Cleaner, Evil West (Windows), Superball, Donut County, and Nova Roma (Game Preview). Per Khel Now, Game Pass members can buy departing titles at a member discount before they leave, which softens the blow if you’re mid-playthrough — but only if you act before the 15th.

The playWhat to do before the 15th and the 20th
So here’s the honest priority list. If you’re on Game Pass and haven’t started Clair Obscur, start it tonight — or at minimum buy it at the member discount before October 15, because you will want to finish this one and it will not be this cheap again for a while. A Plague Tale: Requiem deserves the same treatment if you’re anywhere near the end. On the PlayStation side, Silent Hill 2 before October 20 is the move, especially with Townfall coming — and Yakuza: Like a Dragon is the long-haul pick if you want one big RPG to carry you into the holidays.
All of this lands in a prickly moment for the service. Sony’s controversial PS Plus price hike earlier this year pushed the Essential tier to £7.99 a month (£11.99 Extra, £14.99 Premium), per NME, and players threatened cancellations when Sony said it would scrap physical releases from early 2028 — though a later report found the protest had “no measurable impact” on engagement. The value proposition, in other words, is exactly what months like this are for: claim what’s free, finish what’s leaving.
And don’t forget the inbound side: October’s PS Plus monthly games are sitting there waiting to be claimed, and the Extra and Premium catalog additions get announced October 14 — which usually means a fresh wave of “last chance” anxiety about a month from now. October is stacked everywhere — Gears: E-Day just launched — so triage accordingly. The leavers don’t wait.
