The Rewind

Tom Welling Posted His Hotel View to Instagram and Forgot to Check the Reflection. It Stayed Up for 10 Hours.

Let’s rewind the tape to Friday in New York. Smallville’s Tom Welling posted his hotel skyline to Instagram Stories with a cheery “Hello, NYCC” — and never noticed his own fully exposed reflection in the window glass. The Story sat up for at least ten hours. The screenshots have millions of views. That’s not very Clark Kent of him.

The Short Version

Let’s rewind the tape to Friday morning in New York City. Tom Welling — 49 years old, the man who played Clark Kent for ten seasons of Smallville — checked into his hotel for New York Comic Con, walked to the window, snapped a picture of the skyline, and posted it to his Instagram Stories with a friendly little caption: “Hello, NYCC.” What he did not notice, in a lapse of quality control that will live in infamy, was his own fully exposed reflection staring back at him from the window glass. The Story sat on his public account — 2.3 million followers, per Entertainment Weekly — for at least ten hours before it was deleted. By then, screenshots had already racked up millions of views across X, and Clark Kent had committed the single most on-brand blunder in television history.

The timing is what elevates this from blooper to legacy. Welling is in the Big Apple for New York Comic Con, where on Saturday the Smallville cast reunited at the Javits Center for “The Road to Superman: 25 Years of Smallville” — Welling, Michael Rosenbaum, Kristin Kreuk, Erica Durance, all in the building to celebrate the show’s 25th anniversary on October 16. Smallville premiered on the WB in 2001, ran ten seasons, and wrapped on the CW in May 2011. So picture the scene: the cast is about to walk onstage for a milestone reunion, and the group chat is already on fire because Superman spent Friday night accidentally posting the world’s worst thirst trap to his own Story. Page Six’s kicker — “That’s not very Clark Kent of him” — deserves a raise.

And then the universe added a punchline no writer would dare pitch. At that very same Comic Con panel on Saturday, Welling told the crowd about his Smallville costar John Glover — Lionel Luthor himself — walking into Welling’s makeup trailer with a big smile and a fan-made nude photo he’d found on the internet. Glover asked if it was really him. Welling, deadpan: “Yep.” And he signed it. Read that again. The man spent his Saturday laughing about a fake naked photo of himself. The man spent his Friday accidentally publishing a real one. You cannot write this. You can only rewind the tape and watch a 49-year-old man get pantsed by architecture.

Now the ground rules, because this is the Rewind and facts come first. We are describing the mishap, not reproducing the image — the screenshot stays out of this publication, full stop, same as every outlet that censored its version. The joke is the self-own, never the body: Welling is a grown man, a public figure with a verified account, and he did this to himself with his own caption. Nobody else is the butt of this. A rep for Welling didn’t immediately respond to Page Six’s request for comment — which is the correct move, because there is no statement in the English language that improves this situation. “No comment” is the only undefeated press strategy on the board.

The internet, naturally, did what the internet does. The screenshots spread across X with millions of collective views before the Story even came down. The Smallville fandom — a group of people who waited 25 years for this reunion — got a pre-show nobody asked for and everybody screenshotted. And somewhere in a hotel room in Manhattan, a man learned the lesson every celebrity learns exactly once: check the reflection. Windows are mirrors with a view. Your phone sees what you don’t. And “Hello, NYCC” is now the funniest caption of 2026.

The verdict

This is the platonic ideal of a donkey self-own — no one did this to Tom Welling except Tom Welling, the receipt is his own caption, and the delete button showed up ten hours late to a fight that was already over. Punch up, always: the target is a powerful, famous adult who posted his own reflection to 2.3 million followers, never the fans who screenshotted it and never anybody’s body. Moral clarity in one line: check the glass, king. Final score: Tom Welling 0, window reflection 1. That’s not very Clark Kent of him — but it is very, very funny.
