THURSDAY, OCTOBER 8, 2026 — Thursday night belongs to Conference USA. The Liberty Flames — winners of four straight, owners of one of the stingiest recent defenses in the country and a running back who keeps moving the chains — host the Sam Houston Bearkats at Williams Stadium in Lynchburg, Virginia, at 7 p.m. ET on ESPNU. Liberty is laying 13.5 points. The total is 52.5. And the more interesting number might be the second one, because the people who do this for a living cannot agree on it.
This is the third meeting since Sam Houston moved up to the FBS level, and the first two were street fights: Liberty won 21-16 in 2023, Sam Houston won 20-18 in 2024. Neither game was decided by more than five points. The spread says this one won’t be close. The series says don’t be so sure.
02 The Flames’ roll
Liberty (4-1, 1-0 CUSA) has won four straight since opening the season with a 20-13 loss to James Madison — and that loss looks better by the week. The Dukes are 5-0 straight up and against the spread, covering by double digits in each of their last four games, and Liberty out-gained them while holding them to 291 total yards in Week 1, per WagerTalk. Sometimes a loss is a résumé line.
Since then, the Flames have been piling up comfortable wins. They beat Delaware 30-14 on Friday, covering as 6.5-point road favorites. They’ve scored at least 30 points in three straight games, covering in each of those, and sit 3-2 against the spread. The engine is running back Kam Davis, who has 457 yards on just 54 carries — that’s 8.5 a pop — and an offense that keeps finding the end zone.
The defense has been the quieter story, and maybe the better one. Liberty hasn’t allowed more than 23 points in a game all season, has held its last three opponents to 17 points or fewer, and gives up 19 per game at home, per Sportsbook Wire. One caveat, via WagerTalk: Delaware was starting its third-string quarterback situation — three backup QBs saw the field. Thursday brings a real arm. We’ll see how real the defense is.

03 Sam Houston’s case
The Bearkats (1-3, 0-0 CUSA) are the kind of team that makes a 13.5-point spread feel heavier than it looks. They’re 3-1 against the spread despite the losing record. They’re coming off a bye. And their last game tells you everything about them: a 49-14 loss at No. 9 Texas Tech on Sept. 26 that was 21-14 at halftime — before two Sam Houston interceptions turned into Red Raider touchdowns.
Read that again, because it’s the whole Bearkat season in one half: good enough to hang with a top-10 team for 30 minutes, generous enough to hand them 14 points. The talent to compete and the mistakes to lose, all in the same afternoon.
The talent starts with sophomore quarterback Landyn Locke, in his second stint running the Sam Houston offense and showing real improvement, per WagerTalk. The numbers back it up: a Conference USA-best 1,168 passing yards, 11 touchdowns against 3 interceptions in 145 attempts, completing 66.2% of his throws. He can move this team.
The problem is what happens when he can’t do it alone. The ground game is barely there: leading back Alton McCaskill has just 165 yards through four games, and the rush offense ranks 129th nationally at 100.0 yards per game. Texas Tech ran for 219 yards on the Bearkats. If Kam Davis gets rolling early and Locke has to throw Sam Houston back into it against a defense that doesn’t give up much — well, that’s how 13.5-point spreads get covered.

04 The total: 52.5, and the split
Here’s where it gets fun. The line opened at Liberty -13.5 and 52.5 on Oct. 4 and hasn’t budged since, per WagerTalk — though 100% of the spread money and 100% of the spread tickets are on the Flames, which is the kind of lopsided book that makes bettors nervous. Sportsbooks don’t stay in business paying everybody.
On the total, the sharps are split down the middle. WagerTalk’s best bet is Over 52.5: Locke’s improvement and the Bearkats’ tempo should put points on the board, Liberty won’t ease off the way it did against Delaware’s backups, and Sam Houston’s giveaways only add scoring chances. Sportsbook Wire goes the other way — Under 52.5 — on the strength of two defenses that are both rolling.
And the house? The Ticket is on the Over 52.5 as the fourth leg of tonight’s Super Ticker, graded B- — Liberty has topped 30 in three straight and Sam Houston’s passing game travels. So the Ticket agrees with WagerTalk, and Sportsbook Wire is on the other side. Somebody’s right. The Ticket’s guardrails say the leg dies if the number moves past its playable range — as of this morning, it hasn’t moved.
Nothing better than a total both sides love for opposite reasons. Grab your popcorn.

05 Series history: always close
The series file is short and loud. Liberty won the first FBS-era meeting 21-16 at home in October 2023 — but never came close to covering as a 21.5-point favorite. Sam Houston answered with a 20-18 upset as a small home underdog in November 2024. Neither game was decided by more than five points, per WagerTalk.
So the series has never produced a 13.5-point game, and Liberty is laying nearly three times that. Spreads don’t care about history. Bettors do.
06 The rest of Thursday’s slate
