'The Diplomat' Season 4 Trailer Promises War With Russia — All 8 Episodes Drop Oct. 15

Netflix dropped the first trailer for The Diplomat Season 4 this week, and it doesn't ease viewers in: the fragile U.S.-U.K. peace is shattered, and the White House is steering America toward war with Russia.

The political thriller returns Oct. 15 with all eight episodes at once — and the trailer picks up directly in the fallout of Season 3, which ended with Grace Penn (Allison Janney) becoming president and Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell) positioned as her vice president.

Season 4 opens, per Netflix, with "one catastrophic moment" that shatters the fragile peace Kate Wyler brokered between the United States and the United Kingdom. From there, the conspiracy goes straight to the top: President Penn and Vice President Hal become involved in a scheme to steal Russia's most powerful weapon — a move that could push the United States toward outright war.

Kate Wyler (Keri Russell), the career foreign-service officer turned U.S. ambassador to the U.K., finds her professional responsibilities tangled once again with the personal fallout of her fractured marriage to Hal — who is now both her husband and the vice president at the center of the conspiracy. Forced into an uneasy partnership with Todd Penn (Bradley Whitford), the First Gentleman, Kate races to counter a threat the trailer paints as spiraling fast.

Netflix previously confirmed Janney and Whitford as series regulars for Season 4, expanding the roles of the presidential couple after their introduction in Season 3 — and Janney arrives fresh off an Emmy win for the role. The returning ensemble also includes Ato Essandoh, Ali Ahn, Nana Mensah and Rory Kinnear, with creator, showrunner and executive producer Debora Cahn steering the season.

The timing couldn't be better for the show. The Diplomat debuted on Netflix in 2023 and has earned steady critical attention for Russell's performance and its unusual blend of geopolitical suspense with the slow-motion collapse of Kate and Hal's marriage — prestige-TV seriousness wrapped around a relationship drama. Seasons 1 through 3 are all streaming now, which makes the next eleven days the perfect runway for a catch-up binge.

And in a fall crowded with new prestige entries — HBO's War broke out this same week — The Diplomat has a real advantage: it's an established hit with its biggest cast yet and its highest stakes ever. October 15 can't come fast enough.
