LOS ANGELES — The kids who escaped Dennison are done running. On Monday, MGM+ released the official trailer for season two of The Institute, the series adaptation of Stephen King’s 2019 bestselling novel, and the roughly two-minute preview makes one thing clear: this season, the gifted teens are going on the offensive. The season premieres November 8 on MGM+ with eight new episodes.
The trailer picks up in the immediate aftermath of the season one escape. Luke Ellis (Joe Freeman) and his fellow survivors — Nicky, Kalisha, Tim Jamieson and George — are shown preparing to take the fight to the entire organization that stole them, while the Institute itself regroups. In the trailer, Tim Jamieson (Ben Barnes) said, “The Institute is more powerful than you can possibly imagine,” and Luke Ellis (Joe Freeman) added, “Maybe the only way to destroy this is from the inside.”
That mission statement matches MGM+’s official synopsis for the season: with Luke and his friends searching for a way to end the Institute for good, the Director enlists a new ally — tech billionaire Nolan Reeves — to help him rebuild, while a fugitive Sigsby angles for a way back “in.” The trailer gives an extended look at Reeves’ contribution to the rebuild — technological upgrades, advanced surveillance and corporate resources aimed at tracking the children — alongside glimpses of Ms. Sigsby (Mary-Louise Parker) scheming her way back into the organization she once ran.

To understand why the trailer’s “fight back” posture matters, it helps to remember where season one left things. The Institute premiered July 13, 2025 and quickly became a genuine breakout for MGM+ — reportedly the streamer’s best-ever series premiere, per Screen Rant — across an eight-episode run that adapted King’s novel in full. The network moved fast, renewing the series for a second eight-episode season that August; production wrapped in early June 2026.
The series follows Luke Ellis, a 12-year-old genius kidnapped after his parents are murdered in a home invasion, who wakes in a mysterious facility called the Institute housing other kidnapped children — kids with telepathic and telekinetic abilities, studied and experimented on by an organization that claims it is saving the world. In a nearby town, haunted former police officer Tim Jamieson arrives looking for a quiet new life, and his story collides with Luke’s. By the season one finale, the surviving teens had escaped — with the Institute hunting them down.

Here is the part that should excite King readers most: season two sails past the last page of the book. Season one covered the entire 2019 novel, which means everything from November 8 onward is uncharted — story the show’s creative team has been building toward deliberately. Executive producer and writer Benjamin Cavell has said the team deliberately left room for the story to continue beyond the novel, and the trailer’s biggest book-divergence confirms it: Ms. Sigsby, who dies in King’s novel, is alive and on the run in season two, now pursuing vengeance and a return to power, her storyline digging deeper into the Institute’s inner workings.
That sense of unfinished business is baked into the season’s central three-way struggle. As the trailer lays it out, Luke’s group is trying to destroy the Institute, the Director is trying to rebuild it, and Sigsby is trying to reclaim her place inside it — three fronts colliding over one organization’s future.

The rebuild brings the season’s headline addition: Alfie Allen, the Game of Thrones veteran, joins the cast as Nolan Reeves, described as “an eccentric European tech billionaire and one of the Institute’s financial backers,” according to MGM+’s official character description, with “an ambitious agenda all his own.” The casting was first reported by Deadline back in February. In the trailer, Reeves is the Director’s new ally — a deep-pocketed operator whose own agenda is anyone’s guess, and a very modern kind of villain for a story about institutional power.
The creative team stays intact from season one: director and executive producer Jack Bender, writer and executive producer Benjamin Cavell, and executive producers Stephen King, Gary Barber, Sam Sheridan, Ed Redlich and Michael Mahoney, with MGM+ Studios producing. Alongside Joe Freeman, Ben Barnes and Mary-Louise Parker, the returning cast includes Simone Miller as Kalisha, Fionn Laird as Nicky, Arlen So as George, Robert Joy as Dr. Hendricks and Hannah Galway as Wendy.
The timing makes for a crowded month in King television. The trailer arrives in the same week that Mike Flanagan’s Carrie adaptation hits Prime Video with all eight episodes, and ahead of October 15’s Crystal Lake premiere on Peacock — a horror TV season that is shaping up to be one of the busiest in recent memory. The Institute season two premieres November 8 on MGM+. The official trailer is on MGM+’s YouTube channel, and the tagline the network chose for it — “not going down easy” — sounds about right. The kids aren’t hiding anymore.
