THURSDAY, OCTOBER 8, 2026 — Week 5 of the NFL season opens tonight with a matchup that tells you everything about where these two teams are headed. In Arlington, the 2-2 Cowboys just put together their best offensive performance of the season, a 34-30 comeback win in Houston. In Tampa, the 0-4 Buccaneers are down to an undrafted rookie quarterback, missing four defensive contributors, and staring at the franchise’s first 0-4 start since 2013. Thursday Night Football has a way of making mismatches interesting — and a way of making them worse.
02 Episode II of the Jalon Daniels Show
Start with the obvious: the Buccaneers will be without Baker Mayfield again. Mayfield was ruled out Wednesday after missing every practice this week, still recovering from the dislocated right thumb he suffered in the Week 3 loss to Minnesota. Head coach Todd Bowles said on Sept. 28 that Mayfield would miss at least three weeks, and while the quarterback is pushing to beat that timeline — he was scheduled to have stitches removed on Oct. 5, per Tom Pelissero — he hasn’t practiced in any capacity, and next week’s matchup with the Steelers is the earliest realistic target. The good news for Tampa: an MRI on Sept. 28 showed no additional ligament or tendon damage beyond the dislocation, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, and the Bucs haven’t put Mayfield on injured reserve. The $165 million man they extended in September will be back. Just not tonight.
That means a second straight start for Jalon Daniels, the undrafted rookie who USA Today has already dubbed the star of “the Jalon Daniels Show Episode II.” His first start was a mixed bag in a 17-14 loss to Green Bay: 19 of 27 for 148 yards, a touchdown, two interceptions, and 55 rushing yards on eight carries. Across his two appearances this season he’s 19-for-30 for 148 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions, adding 64 rushing yards on nine attempts. The legs are real. The reads are a work in progress. And now he gets a road start, on a short week, against a Dallas defense that will be coming after him.
The depth chart behind him tells the story of a team that only rostered two quarterbacks coming into the season: Easton Stick, elevated from the practice squad last week, backs up Daniels again, and Brett Rypien — signed to the practice squad on Sept. 29, two days after Mayfield’s injury — is the emergency option. If Daniels has to leave this game, the options get thin fast.

03 Dallas Found Its Offense at Exactly the Right Time
Here’s the other side of the mismatch, and it’s a problem for Tampa: the Cowboys just played their best offensive game of the season. Dak Prescott completed 32 of 45 passes for 335 yards in the 34-30 win at Houston, and he did it with his throwing hand wrapped after Sunday — he’s not on the injury report this week. CeeDee Lamb put up the performance of Week 4: a career-high 17 receptions for 189 yards and the game-winning touchdown. Javonte Williams punched in three second-half rushing touchdowns, and Dallas has now scored at least 20 points in all four games.
This is a deep, multi-weapon attack. George Pickens took a back seat to Lamb’s monster afternoon but remains a WR1/WR2-caliber threat, and tight end Jake Ferguson converted a fourth-and-4 on the game-winning drive — the kind of quiet play that wins games. Prescott has 1,065 passing yards through four games, and now he gets a Tampa Bay defense that will be without star safety Antoine Winfield Jr., who left the Packers game with a rib injury after 55 snaps. Against a rookie quarterback making his second start, Dallas shouldn’t need 30 points. It might score them anyway.

04 What Decides It: Turnovers, the Trenches, and the Short Week
Strip away the names and this game comes down to three things. First, the turnover battle: Daniels threw two interceptions in his first start, and Tampa’s offense has scored 19, 16 and 14 points over its last three games — 49 total, with an implied team total around 19 tonight. Dallas will dare the rookie to beat them. Second, the trenches: the Cowboys are down Cobie Durant, DeMarvion Overshown and Drew Shelton, with Tyler Smith and Jonathan Mingo questionable, but Tampa’s own front is compromised too, missing Dennis and with Morrison out on the back end. Third, the script: if Dallas gets into the high 20s early, Tampa’s path to staying within double digits runs through Bucky Irving (241 rushing yards through four games) grinding clock — the exact opposite of what a nine-point underdog wants.
Tampa’s best hope is the part of the game plan that doesn’t show up in the box score: Emeka Egbuka leads the Bucs with 24 targets, Chris Godwin Jr. has caught 16 of his 18 targets for 142 yards, and Kenny Gainwell scored against Green Bay and has real PPR appeal if the Bucs are chasing. Daniels’ legs (55 yards on eight carries last week) can extend drives. None of it matters if he gives Dallas short fields. The spread sits around Dallas -9.5 with a total of 47.5, and frankly, the only number that scares me is how thin Tampa’s margin is: they’ve lost four straight, three of them by one score or less, and tonight they walk into one of the league’s toughest road environments with a rookie.

05 How to Watch — and Where the Smart Money Leans
Kickoff is 8:15 p.m. ET from AT&T Stadium. Prime Video carries the national broadcast for the fifth straight season, with FOX simulcasting in-market — WTVT in Tampa, KDFW in Dallas-Fort Worth. Al Michaels and Kirk Herbstreit call it, with Kaylee Hartung on the sideline. If you’re betting it rather than just watching it, today’s Ticket card has the Cowboys at -8.5 as the featured Super Ticker leg — the case being that a healthy Dallas offense against a depleted, rookie-led Tampa team is the most lopsided matchup on the Week 5 board. And for the full Thursday picture around the league, this morning’s NFL Thursday roundup has you covered.
The honest take: Thursday night games are weird, road rookies on short weeks are live underdogs more often than the line suggests, and 0-4 teams play desperate. But desperate doesn’t block Micah Parsons’ old teammates, and it doesn’t cover CeeDee Lamb. Dallas should win. The only question is whether Tampa makes them sweat.
