Trump to Republicans: Vote by Mail — the Same Mail Voting He Called “Inherently Corrupt”

For years he said mail ballots were a “Nation Destroying SCAM.” On Saturday he posted a video telling Republicans to use them. The only thing that changed is the polling.

The Short Version

Twenty-eight days before the midterms, the man who built a political movement on the claim that mail-in ballots are how elections get stolen has become a mail-in voting evangelist. Not quietly, not in a policy memo — in a campaign video, in his own cadence, telling Republicans to do the thing he spent years describing as a practice rife with fraud.

The video went up Saturday on Truth Social, as reported by the Election Law Blog. “Vote early. Vote by mail. Or vote in person on Election Day,” Trump said in the clip, promoting a Republican Party website with ballot guidance. The caption did the real talking — Trump wrote: “Republicans must WIN the 2026 Midterm Elections, and we must use every appropriate tool — Whether you vote early, absentee, by mail, or in-person, we must ‘swamp’ the Radical Left Dumocrats with massive turnout! SO IMPORTANT — PLEASE GET OUT AND VOTE.”

Read that twice, because the whiplash is the story. In August, the same account posted: “ELECTIONS CAN NEVER BE HONEST WITH MAIL IN BALLOTS/VOTING,” according to Democracy Docket's review of his posts. Last month, mail voting was “totally CORRUPT and out of control,” a “Nation Destroying SCAM.” As Democracy Docket and Caplin News both report, he signed two executive orders trying to restrict mail ballots nationwide — one throwing out ballots arriving after Election Day, one letting the Postal Service refuse ballots from voters not on a federal citizenship list. Both were blocked in court. Last month, the Supreme Court declined to let the administration's mail-ballot restrictions take effect.

So a reporter asked the obvious question this week: why are you telling your supporters to vote by mail if you think it's fraud? In video of the exchange shared by journalist Aaron Rupar, Trump said on tape: “I'd rather have them vote in person, but they can vote by mail if they want. But there is a lot of cheating in vote by mail.” The reporter replied that there's no evidence of that. “You are fake news,” Trump said, and turned away.

The math beat the myth

Richard Pildes, the NYU election law professor, called the video what it is, telling the New York Times — via the Election Law Blog's report — that it represents a major shift and a response to failure. Trump's efforts to restrict mail-in voting have failed “across the board,” Pildes said — “he's realizing that his efforts to change policy on mail-in voting have basically run aground at this point, and he's shifting gears.” Translation: the summer was for making mail voting harder. The fall is for pretending it was his idea all along.

The numbers explain the pivot better than any spin. In 2024, 37% of Democrats and 24% of Republicans voted by mail, according to the MIT Election Data and Science Lab figures cited by Democracy Docket. Democrats bank their votes early; Republicans who were told for years that mail ballots are corrupt stayed home or waited for Election Day — and it cost them. It cost Trump in 2020 and it cost Republicans in the 2022 midterms. Some Republicans have worried quietly for years that discouraging mail voting depresses turnout among rural conservatives, the people who live farthest from a polling place and for whom the mailbox is the most reliable ballot box in the county. The rural base that loves him is the base that needs the mail.

David Becker, who runs the Center for Election Innovation and Research, told One Caribbean Television he estimates more than a million midterm ballots have already been cast — most of them by mail — and says the election is running smoothly under state law, with very few problems. “I'm baffled about the possible disruptions,” he said of the president's threats, noting every challenge to the process so far has failed.

He's done this before

Worth remembering: this isn't even the first reversal. Trump encouraged mail voting in 2024 too, through the “Swamp the Vote” program — then days later called early voting “sad” and “crazy” at a Turning Point Action conference. He votes by mail himself; he did it in Florida as recently as March. Republican strategist Doug Heye's verdict on the new video: it's too soon to say whether Trump sticks with the message, and it would be no surprise if he returns to calling mail voting fraud within days.

Political data analyst Paul Mitchell told Caplin News the timing is about the calendar: the driver of this election is the national landscape, and everything else on the ballot benefits from higher turnout. “In a way, Trump is on the ballot even though he's not on the ballot,” Mitchell said. That's the same logic as the Clarksville rally's closing line — and it explains why the mail-vote reversal and the rally are really one story. The campaign has decided the midterms are a turnout war, and it's done being picky about how the votes arrive.

The polls are the tell. Trump's approval is averaging 37% in the New York Times polling averages cited by Caplin News, Democrats' odds of taking Congress keep improving, and early voting is already underway in most states. The ballots didn't change. The fraud claims didn't change — he was still making them to that reporter's face this week. The only thing that changed is that he needs the votes. So now mail voting is an “appropriate tool.” Funny how that works.
