LOS ANGELES — FRIDAY, OCTOBER 9, 2026 — Cancel your plans. This is one of those weekends where every streamer decided to drop something at the same time, and TheWrap’s weekend watch guide agrees: Friday through Sunday brings a Stephen King binge, a brand-new Avatar saga, a Ben Affleck kidnapping thriller, pirates on MGM+ and the biggest movie of the year landing on your couch. Here’s the full rundown — every title, date and episode count verified.
02 Carrie (Prime Video) — The Binge
Mike Flanagan’s Carrie is the weekend’s main event, and it didn’t even wait for Friday. All eight episodes dropped Wednesday, October 7 at 3 a.m. ET on Prime Video — no weekly drip, the whole season at once, per Decider and JustJared. This is the first time Stephen King’s 1974 debut novel has ever been a TV series, and getting there took some convincing: Flanagan had to talk two people into it, himself and King, who initially told him, essentially, to leave Carrie alone, Startefacts reported.
Summer H. Howell plays Carrie White, reimagined for the social-media era — a bullied high schooler caught in a viral bullying scandal while her telekinetic powers wake up, per Heaven of Horror’s review. Samantha Sloyan, a Flanagan-ensemble regular, plays her mother Margaret, with Siena Agudong, Alison Thornton, Joel Oulette, Josie Totah and Matthew Lillard rounding out the cast, per Decider. Flanagan wrote the series, serves as showrunner and directed four of the eight episodes; the other four were directed by women — Kate Siegel, Kyra Sedgwick, Hiromi Kamata and Axelle Carolyn — a deliberate call Flanagan framed as long overdue, Heaven of Horror reported. Decider has it Certified Fresh at 85% on Rotten Tomatoes. Spooky season could not have asked for a better-timed binge.

03 Avatar: Seven Havens (Paramount+) — The Event
Friday brings the biggest animation premiere of the fall: Avatar: Seven Havens premieres on Paramount+ with its first three episodes, kicking off Book 1: Survival, a 13-episode season, per Paramount+ and JustJared. And this is the real thing — created by original Avatar masterminds Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, produced by Avatar Studios and Nickelodeon Animation.
The setup is the boldest swing the franchise has ever taken: 225 years after The Legend of Korra, in a world shattered by an apocalyptic event, a 9-year-old Earthbender named Pavi (voiced by newcomer Saheli Khan) discovers she’s the next Avatar — and the world sees her as a destroyer, not a savior, per Wikipedia and JustJared. Hunted by human and spirit enemies, she and her long-lost twin sister Nisha (Aishu Devan) have to uncover their mysterious origins and save the Seven Havens, the last pillars of civilization. The voice cast includes Akshay Khanna, Major Curda, Sakina Jaffrey, Darren Barnet, Dianne Doan and franchise veteran Dee Bradley Baker, per Paramount+.
The release plan: three episodes Friday, then three-episode batches on October 16 and 23, with a four-episode finale on October 30, per JustJared — and a second 13-episode season is already ordered. Twelve years after Korra ended, the Avatar is back. The fandom already has opinions — ComingSoon reported early grumbling about the animation style. Watch it and pick a side.

04 Animals (Netflix) — The Thriller
Ben Affleck’s Animals hits Netflix and select theaters Friday, October 9, and it’s the weekend’s grown-up pick. Affleck directs, co-writes and stars as Mark Kimball, a Los Angeles mayoral candidate whose son is kidnapped — leaving him and his wife Abigail (Kerry Washington) a few hours to raise a ransom they can’t afford, with most of their money sunk into the campaign, per Mac Observer and Wikipedia. The cast stacks up fast: Gillian Anderson as Dayle, a mysterious fixer who knows more than she says, plus Steven Yeun, Adriana Paz, Luis Gerardo Méndez and Ray Fisher, per ComingSoon and Mac Observer. It’s R-rated and runs 1 hour 48 minutes.
Two things worth knowing going in. First, Affleck confirmed at a recent Screentime event that AI tools were used “for lots of things” in post-production — declining to say exactly where, comparing the reveal to a magician explaining a trick, Storyboard18 reported. Second, the movie was once going to star Matt Damon; scheduling — he was busy on Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey — moved Damon to a producer role and Affleck took the lead himself, Mandatory reported. 05 Treasure Island (MGM+) + Brand New Day (PVOD) — Sunday and the Couch
Sunday belongs to pirates. MGM+’s Treasure Island premieres October 11 at 10 p.m. ET, a six-episode reinvention of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic created by Robert Murphy (McDonald & Dodds), per TheWrap, Memorable TV and TV Series Finale. The big twist: Jim Hawkins’ mother is the co-lead — Hayley Atwell plays Bess Hawkins, making the fast, clever decisions once a treasure map lands in the family’s hands, with Tom Sweet as Jim. David Oyelowo is Long John Silver, “a ruthless survivor who is just as charming as he is cunning,” per MGM+’s synopsis via TV Series Finale, with Jack Huston as a new character, British agent Aaron Graham, and Tomer Capone as Billy Bones. Set in 1788 across storm-battered Cornwall, the high seas and a jungle island soaked in secrets, it’s the fall’s most old-fashioned-fun bet — and it airs on Paramount+ in the UK, per Memorable TV.

And if you’d rather stay on the couch: Spider-Man: Brand New Day — Tom Holland’s fourth solo outing, the $2.5 billion behemoth — landed on premium video-on-demand Tuesday, October 6, via Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, per ComingSoon and Page Six. It’s $29.99 to buy and $24.99 to rent on Prime Video, Apple TV, Google Play and Fandango, and it shot straight to No. 1 on the iTunes movie chart within hours of release, per ComingSoon. The numbers are silly: about $2.5 billion worldwide, the third-highest-grossing film of all time, the highest-grossing domestic release ever at $954 million, a $360 million domestic opening weekend that broke Avengers: Endgame’s record, 90% on Rotten Tomatoes and an A CinemaScore, per ComingSoon, Page Six and Men’s Journal. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and co-starring Zendaya, Jacob Batalon, Mark Ruffalo, Michael Mando, Sadie Sink (as a new telepathic threat) and Jon Bernthal, it picks up in the aftermath of No Way Home, with Peter Parker living in a world where everyone has forgotten he exists, per Page Six. The 4K Blu-ray lands December 15. For what’s coming next, our coming-soon desk has the calendar — and today’s other headlines are here.
