Born and raised in Melbourne, Victoria, and Bulman, Northern Territory, he rose to prominence playing Kim Hyde in the Australian television series Home and Away (2004–2007) before beginning a film career in Hollywood. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Hemsworth starred as Thor in the 2011 film of the same name and reprised the role in several subsequent instalments, which established him among the world's highest-paid actors.

Chris Hemsworth was born in 1983 in Melbourne, Australia, and he won the role of Thor by beating out -- among others -- his own younger brother Liam. The early Thor films played him straight: the Shakespearean god with the hammer. Then Taika Waititi got hold of him for Thor: Ragnarok (2017) and discovered what the rest of us now know -- Hemsworth is genuinely, effortlessly funny. The god of thunder became a comedy star, and the MCU was never the same.
He has been one of the franchise's pillars ever since: The Avengers (2012), Infinity War (2018), Endgame (2019). But he has also built a second career as an action lead: Tyler Rake in Extraction (2020) and Extraction 2 (2023), the Netflix mercenary films directed by his former Marvel stunt coordinator Sam Hargrave, with the kind of long-take, bone-crunching action that made Hemsworth say he'd never experienced that amount of action before. He played the warlord Dementus in Furiosa (2024), all swagger and menace.
Hemsworth lives in Byron Bay, Australia, with his wife Elsa Pataky and their three children, runs the Centr fitness platform, and has become the rare movie star who seems to actually enjoy being famous -- surfing, training, joking his way through press tours. He once admitted the Thor films got a little too silly and owned it completely. That is the whole appeal: the god who knows he's in on the joke.
Chris Hemsworth on Playing Tyler Rake in 'Extraction 2' | BellaNaija Exclusive.
The most revealing thing Chris Hemsworth ever filmed wasn’t a Marvel battle — it was a doctor’s appointment. For his National Geographic/Disney+ docuseries Limitless (2022), produced by Darren Aronofsky, Hemsworth subjected himself to extreme longevity challenges: swimming in Arctic water, climbing a rope up a skyscraper, fasting for days. But the episode titled “Memory” delivered news no stunt could top: genetic testing showed he carries two copies of the APOE4 gene — one from each parent — making him eight to ten times more likely to develop Alzheimer’s than the general population. Only two to three percent of people carry both copies. His own grandfather had lived with the disease.
Hemsworth insisted the cameras keep rolling. “If this is a motivator for people to take better care of themselves,” he said, “then fantastic.” And then he did something almost unheard of for a star at his peak: he stepped back. After finishing his contracted work, he told Vanity Fair he was going home to Byron Bay — “it’s not like I’ve been handed my resignation,” he clarified — to simplify, be with Elsa Pataky and their three kids, and apply the prevention playbook the show taught him: sleep, stress management, nutrition, movement. The god of thunder chose to be a present father instead. It may be the strongest thing he has ever done on camera — and it happened off it.
