About Matthias

Matthias Schoenaerts was born on 8 December 1977 in Antwerp, Belgium, the son of Flemish stage and film actor Julien Schoenaerts. Acting was the family trade — but young Matthias came to it sideways. He made his film debut at fourteen in Daens (1992), the historical drama about a nineteenth-century priest that was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, then spent his teenage years as a graffiti artist working under the pseudonym Zenith. That doubleness — the trained actor and the street artist, the discipline and the rawness — has defined every performance since.

He worked his way through Belgian short films and television guest roles before his first lead in Love Belongs to Everyone (2006), playing a mentally challenged ex-convict. But it was Loft (2008) that made him a star in his homeland: as Filip, the intelligent, manipulative womanizer at the center of the thriller, he anchored what became the highest-grossing Flemish film of its time. Belgium had its leading man. The rest of the world just hadn't been introduced yet.

The introduction came as a one-two punch that announced one of the most formidable screen presences of his generation. In Michaël R. Roskam's Bullhead (2011) — released internationally as Rundskop — Schoenaerts played Jacky Vanmarsenille, a cattle farmer destroyed by his entanglement in the illegal hormone mafia. He transformed his body for the role, building himself into something bovine and wounded, and played Jacky as a man whose bulk is both armor and prison. The film was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, and Schoenaerts' performance was the reason it traveled. A year later came Jacques Audiard's Rust and Bone (2012), opposite Marion Cotillard, in which he played Ali, a rootless kickboxer who falls for a woman who has lost her legs. Where Bullhead was all mass and menace, Rust and Bone was tenderness barely held together — and it won him the César Award for Most Promising Actor. Two films, two poles of masculinity, one actor.

Hollywood noticed immediately, and Schoenaerts spent the next decade proving he was more than an import. He played Eric Deeds, the menacing bar regular, in Michaël R. Roskam's Brooklyn crime drama The Drop (2014) opposite Tom Hardy; the German officer Bruno von Falk in the wartime romance Suite Française (2015); Gabriel Oak, the steadfast shepherd, in Thomas Vinterberg's Far from the Madding Crowd (2015) opposite Carey Mulligan; and Hans Axgil in Tom Hooper's The Danish Girl (2015). In Alice Winocour's Disorder (2015) — released in some territories as Maryland — he gave one of his finest performances as an ex-soldier with PTSD hired as a bodyguard, a portrait of vigilance curdling into paranoia that critics singled out as the film's bruised heart. The same year he sparred with Tilda Swinton and Ralph Fiennes in Luca Guadagnino's sun-drenched A Bigger Splash.

In 2015 France named him a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters, formal recognition of what the festival circuit already knew. He kept choosing the hard roles: the chilling Uncle Vanya in Francis Lawrence's Red Sparrow (2018) opposite Jennifer Lawrence; the Soviet submarine captain in Thomas Vinterberg's Kursk (2018); and Roman Coleman in Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre's The Mustang (2019), a prison inmate in a wild-horse training program. The Mustang drew some of the best reviews of his career — Schoenaerts, who did much of his own horse work, played a man learning gentleness from an animal that owed him nothing, and the performance is a masterclass in letting stillness do the talking.

He has since moved fluidly between European arthouse and global streaming scale: the immortal warrior Booker in Netflix's The Old Guard (2020) opposite Charlize Theron; the lead in the spaghetti-western television series Django; and a string of French-language features that keep him rooted in the cinema that raised him. Through it all, the graffiti kid from Antwerp has remained visible in the work — in the physicality, the refusal to pretty things up, the sense that every character is carrying something he can't quite put down.

What makes Schoenaerts essential is the contradiction he embodies. He has the build of a bouncer and the sensitivity of a poet; he can terrify you in one scene and break your heart in the next, sometimes in the same shot. In an era of actors who brand themselves, he has remained stubbornly, almost old-fashionedly, about the work — choosing directors over franchises, transformation over vanity, and silence over noise. Belgium doesn't produce movie stars. It produced Matthias Schoenaerts, which turned out to be better.

The Previously take

Our read on Matthias Schoenaerts.

Belgium doesn't produce movie stars. It produced Matthias Schoenaerts, which is better. He debuted at fourteen in the Oscar-nominated Daens (1992), then disappeared into the work for nearly two decades before Bullhead (2011) — his physically transformed, terrifying cattle farmer — announced one of Europe's great screen presences.

Rust and Bone (2012) made it official: opposite Marion Cotillard, Schoenaerts played a bare-knuckle brawler with a tenderness that rewired what a tough guy could be. Hollywood came calling — Far from the Madding Crowd (2015), Red Sparrow (2018), The Old Guard (2020) — and he brought the same coiled intensity to every frame, never the caricature the roles invited.

He acts like a boxer fights: patient, economical, and then suddenly everything at once. In an era of interchangeable leading men, Schoenaerts is irreplaceable — the rare import who made Hollywood adjust to him.
