How betting actually works
Three ideas. Five minutes. Everything else builds on these.
The spread, simply
The spread is the great equalizer. If the Vikings are −3.5 against the Packers, they need to win by 4 or more for that bet to win.
The “.5” means there are no ties — you either win or you lose, never a push. Favorites give points. Underdogs get points.
The moneyline, simply
No points. Just pick the winner. A −180 favorite means you risk $180 to win $100. A +150 underdog means $100 wins you $150.
Bigger plus, bigger payout — and a bigger longshot. The minus sign is the price of being likely.
Over / Under, simply
The total. Oddsmakers set a number — say 47.5 points — and you bet whether the two teams combine for more (over) or less (under).
You don’t pick a winner at all. Just: will this game be a shootout or a grind?

Play smart
The rules we play by
Four rules. They matter more than any pick.
Only play moneyIf losing it would ruin your week, don’t bet it. Ever. Set the number before the season starts.
A pick is a guess with mathNobody hits every bet. Anyone selling “locks” is selling something — walk away.
Write every bet downWhat you bet, the line you got, and why. Your own notes teach you more than any tip.
