Roots of the fight game
Before the belts, before the pay-per-views — fighting is the oldest sport on earth. Here's how bare knuckles became boxing and a one-night tournament became the UFC.
Boxing · 3,000+ years
The sweet science
Fist-fighting was an Olympic sport in ancient Greece by 688 BC, fought with leather thongs wrapped around the hands. It went bare-knuckle for two millennia: London's prize ring ruled the 1700s, with Jack Broughton's rules (1743) first banning hitting a downed man. The modern game begins with the Marquess of Queensberry Rules (1867) — gloves, three-minute rounds, the ten-count. John L. Sullivan carried boxing into the gloved era; Jack Johnson, Joe Louis and Muhammad Ali made it the world's theater. The four-belt era (WBA, WBC, IBF, WBO) fragmented the titles from the 1980s on — which is why one division can have four "world champions" today.

MMA · UFC since 1993
From tournament to empire
The UFC began November 12, 1993, as a one-night, eight-man tournament in Denver with almost no rules — style versus style. Royce Gracie won UFC 1 and proved Brazilian jiu-jitsu could beat anyone. The spectacle nearly died under political pressure in the late '90s; SEG sold the company for $2 million in 2001 to Zuffa (the Fertitta brothers and Dana White). The Ultimate Fighter reality show in 2005 — Forrest Griffin vs. Stephan Bonnar live on Spike TV — saved it overnight. Ronda Rousey forced open the women's divisions in 2013, Conor McGregor made it a global PPV machine, and the ESPN era (2019) plus the Paramount+ deal made every card appointment viewing.
