Where They Stand
Dallas hits reset on the sideline and in the front office. Dusty May was hired June 22 for his first NBA head coaching job, with Masai Ujiri arriving as president of basketball operations and Mike Schmitz as general manager. The basketball is still about Cooper Flagg — the 2025 No. 1 pick entering his second season — and whether a healthy Kyrie Irving, back after missing all of 2025-26 with a torn ACL, can restore the offense to a contending level.
The frontcourt is the camp question: Dereck Lively II is still easing back from two foot surgeries, Santi Aldama's March knee surgery is nagging him, and rookie Morez Johnson Jr. (No. 9) has been limited in practice — leaving reps for Daniel Gafford and Moussa Cisse. Newcomers include Zaccharie Risacher, Marcus Sasser and first-round Spanish guard Sergio de Larrea. The preseason opens with the NBA China Games against Houston in Macao on Oct. 9 and 11, and the regular season starts Oct. 21 at Houston.
