Where They Stand
Memphis has chosen its lane — and it's a full rebuild. The Grizzlies traded Ja Morant to Portland this offseason, completing a year-long teardown that also moved Desmond Bane and Jaren Jackson Jr. GM Zach Kleiman addressed the Morant trade publicly for the first time at media day on Sept. 28, saying the team believed Morant wasn't a piece it could take into its next era. The new core starts with No. 3 overall pick Cameron Boozer, joined by young pieces Cedric Coward and Zach Edey, with veteran ballast from Jerami Grant (via the Morant deal), Ty Jerome, Isaiah Stewart and Quinten Post.
Tuomas Iisalo opens his third season with the math problem of camp: 21 players are in the gym for 15 standard roster spots, and Memphis opens camp Sept. 29 at Belmont University in Nashville. The point guard job is wide open between Ty Jerome, Scotty Pippen Jr. and Walter Clayton Jr. The preseason opens Oct. 5 at Atlanta, and opening night is Oct. 21 at home against Utah.
