Where They Stand
The defending champions are the story of the league. New York went 53-29 last season and beat the San Antonio Spurs in five games to win the franchise’s first NBA title in 53 years, and the roster returns with the best continuity in the league — Mitchell Robinson is the lone departure from the core rotation. Mike Brown begins his second season on the bench, with Andre Drummond signed as the backup big and five camp invites fighting for the final roster spots.
Jalen Brunson is working back from left wrist surgery that cut into his summer, and extension talks hang over Miles McBride, Karl-Anthony Towns and Josh Hart, but the title-winning starting five of Brunson, Mikal Bridges, Josh Hart, OG Anunoby and Towns opens camp intact. The title defense tips off October 5 at Philadelphia before Opening Night on October 20 against the LeBron-led 76ers at Madison Square Garden.
