Where They Stand
The team with the league's best record is acting like the hunter, not the hunted. After going 64-18 and falling to San Antonio in a seven-game Western Conference finals, the Thunder enter as co-title favorites (+260) with the Spurs — and they did it while making the hardest financial calls in the league, trading away Luguentz Dort, Isaiah Joe and Aaron Wiggins to dodge the second apron. What remains is still the most decorated young trio in basketball: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams, with Mark Daigneault (seventh season) refusing to name a fifth starter between Cason Wallace and Ajay Mitchell until tip-off.
The youth movement is now the depth. Jared McCain — who sported gold fingernails at media day because "we're trying to win a championship here" — headlines a new wave alongside rookies Aday Mara and Bennett Stirtz, while veterans Alex Caruso and Kenrich Williams (back on a one-year deal after the team declined his $7.2 million option) hold the culture together. The preseason opens Oct. 6 in Tulsa against New Orleans and includes an Oct. 12 trip to Atlanta — a reunion with the traded Dort and Wiggins — before the season's true beginning: Oct. 20 at San Antonio, Opening Night, against the team that ended their season, with the whole league watching.

Cason Wallace or Ajay Mitchell? Mark Daigneault noncommittal on OKC's 5th starter
With Luguentz Dort traded, Daigneault wouldn't name a fifth starter next to Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, saying he won't let "preconceived notions determine his judgment" before Opening Night against San Antonio.
