Where They Stand
Nobody had a louder summer than Philadelphia. After a 45-37 season ended in a second-round sweep by the Knicks, the front office fired Daryl Morey, named Mike Gansey president of basketball operations, and built a superteam: Jaylen Brown arrived in a trade with Boston and LeBron James signed a two-year deal for his record 24th season. With Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey, the projected starting five of Maxey, VJ Edgecombe, Brown, James and Embiid is the league’s most star-powered.
Nick Nurse, entering his fourth season, opened camp this week preaching a championship standard, and early practices have reportedly been electric as the depth — Anfernee Simons, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Dean Wade and rookie Labaron Philon Jr. — settles in. The Sixers host the Knicks on October 5 to open preseason before traveling to Madison Square Garden to face the defending champions on Opening Night, October 20.
