The Story

The Abilene Christian Wildcats spent decades as a small-school Texas power before betting on themselves at the Division I level — and the bet paid off with one of the great upsets of the modern NCAA tournament. The Church of Christ-affiliated school in Abilene made the jump from Division II in 2013, joining the Southland Conference with a fraction of the budget of its new peers, and spent the transition years building toward a moment nobody saw coming.

That moment arrived in March 2021. As a 14 seed in the NCAA tournament, the Wildcats drew third-seeded Texas — a blue blood with McDonald's All-Americans across the roster — and strangled the Longhorns 53-52 in one of the grittiest defensive performances in tournament history. ACU forced 23 Texas turnovers, held the Longhorns scoreless over the final three-plus minutes, and closed the game on a 9-2 run. Joe Golding, the coach who built the program from the DII days, cut down nothing but earned something better: proof that the Wildcats belonged.

Golding's departure for UTEP after the upset could have been the end of the story. Instead, longtime assistant Brette Tanner kept the machine humming, and the Wildcats' 2021 move to the WAC put them in a stronger league with a bigger stage. The program's identity — relentless on-ball pressure, unselfish offense, rosters full of overlooked Texas kids — travels anywhere.

Moody Coliseum is the program's beating heart: an intimate on-campus arena where the Wildcats' defensive intensity feels suffocating and the student section sits close enough to hear every rotation call. In a state crowded with basketball powers, Moody is the room where the little school from Abilene keeps ruining bigger teams' nights.

The heritage is still being written, which is the point. Before 2021, ACU's basketball history lived in Division II lore; now the Texas upset is the founding legend, the clip that plays every March, the reason recruits from across Texas answer the phone. The Wildcats turned one weekend in Indianapolis into a permanent identity: nobody wants to see Abilene Christian on their side of the bracket.

What defines Abilene Christian is the chip on the shoulder: a small Christian school that out-toughed Texas on national television and never looked back. In Abilene, the Wildcats don't need a blue-blood pedigree — they have the 53-52 game, and in March, that's worth more than history.

The 2026-27 Wildcats are Brette Tanner's most experienced group yet, and the pieces fit the program's identity like a glove. The backcourt runs through battle-tested seniors: Rich Smith, the Bronx guard who brings toughness and shot-making, and Joseph Venzant, the Midland product whose redshirt-senior steadiness anchors the rotation. Zy Wright, another senior, gives Tanner a 6-foot-5 wing who can defend multiple spots and slash in transition. That's three seniors who have lived the system — in November and December, when young teams are still learning rotations, that kind of continuity is worth real wins.

The frontcourt has something ACU hasn't always had: genuine size. Cade Hornecker, the 7-foot junior from Amarillo, mans the middle with the kind of rim protection that lets the Wildcats' guards pressure the ball the way they love to. Around him, juniors Ma'Shy Hill and Joseph Scott bring physicality, while senior Bradyn Hubbard adds another rugged forward to the mix. Sophomores Christian Alston and Cbo Newton — the latter a Grambling transfer — are the developmental bets who could swing the season if they jump.

The WAC remains the right stage for this program: a league where the conference tournament in Las Vegas decides everything and a hot weekend can turn a solid season into a March bid. Tanner's teams have made a habit of peaking when it matters, and the formula hasn't changed since 2021 — force turnovers, share the ball, defend like the season depends on every possession, and trust that toughness travels. The non-conference schedule is where ACU builds its résumé and its toughness; the Wildcats have never been afraid to go on the road and take a power-conference team's best punch.

What to watch this winter: whether the senior guards can carry the offense in close games, whether Hornecker's presence finally gives ACU a two-way anchor inside, and whether Moody Coliseum — still one of the best home-court advantages in mid-major basketball — can produce another one of those nights where a ranked visitor walks out shaking its head. The freshman class, headlined by Nashville's Tylan Lewis and Pennsylvania's Isaac Dye, gets its first taste of the system's demands. The 53-52 game will always be the founding legend. But programs don't survive on one March forever. This roster, old and ornery and built for the WAC grind, looks like the group that writes the next chapter.
