The Story

The Alcorn State Braves play in a building named for a legend, in a program built by one. Davey Whitney — "The Wizard" — coached Alcorn State across four decades, winning SWAC championships and taking the Braves to the NCAA tournament, and the Davey L. Whitney Complex in Lorman, Mississippi stands as his monument. In Lorman, Braves basketball is Whitney's living legacy, and every team that walks that floor inherits the standard he set.

The program's proudest modern stretch came in the early 1980s under Whitney, when Alcorn won the SWAC and danced in the NCAA tournament — a monumental achievement for a small HBCU in that era, and proof that the Wizard's program could stand with anyone. Larry Smith, the All-American forward who became an NBA veteran with the Houston Rockets and Golden State Warriors and later a respected coach, remains the program's most famous son — the standard every Alcorn big man has chased since.

The heritage carried into the modern era. In 2022, Landon Bussie's Braves won the SWAC regular-season title and earned a trip to the NIT — the program's return to the national postseason conversation, built on the same defensive toughness, the same pride, the same Lorman grit that defined the Whitney years. For the Braves' faithful, that season felt like the program reclaiming its place among the SWAC's elite — not as a nostalgia act, but as a current power. The Wizard's standard, it turned out, still applies.

Now a new chapter begins. After Bussie's departure, Alcorn State turned to Jake Morton — a Miami (Ohio) '93 graduate — for his first season at the helm in 2025-26. Morton's mandate is a familiar one in Lorman: restore the winning, honor the legacy, and get the Braves back to the top of a SWAC that has never been deeper. His first roster blends experience and upside — junior guard Shane Lancaster (6-4, a 51-percent three-point shooter in the early going), junior Jameel Morris, junior forward Jeremy Ellis (6-8), sophomore guard Davian Williams, junior Bryson Calamese, 6-10 junior William Henderson, senior forward Nick Woodard, junior Tycen McDaniels, junior Alex Hawkins, senior Omari Hamilton, freshman Mike Jones, and senior guard Travis Roberts.

The 2025-26 season was a grind — 9-23 overall, 7-11 in the SWAC — the kind of year that tests a first-year coach's foundation. Non-conference road trips through the power-conference gauntlet are Alcorn's financial reality and its baptism: the Braves play money games, take the checks, and try to survive January intact. The KenPom ledger was honest about the gap — the defense ranked 328th in efficiency — but the SWAC is a league where January resets everything, and Lorman has seen worse starts turn into March runs.

SWAC basketball is Alcorn's world, and the Soul Bowl rivalry with Jackson State is one of the great HBCU rivalries in any sport — two Mississippi programs, generations of history, bands and tailgates and bragging rights that last all year. The Braves' battles with Southern, Alabama State, and Alabama A&M carry the same charge. These games are cultural events, and in Lorman they sell the building out.

The Whitney Complex is hallowed ground for Braves fans: the banners, the retired numbers, and the memory of the Wizard patrolling the sideline. It's a building that reminds every Alcorn player who came before and what the standard is. The 2026-27 season is about Morton's second act of the rebuild — developing the young core, finding the defensive identity that made the Whitney and Bussie teams dangerous, and climbing back toward the top half of the league.

The heritage is pure HBCU basketball lore — the Whitney dynasty, the tournament teams, the players who made Lorman famous. Alcorn's story is inseparable from the broader story of Black college basketball, where the games mattered even when the national media wasn't watching, and where a 3,000-seat arena in rural Mississippi could produce an All-American.

What defines Alcorn State is legacy: Davey Whitney's program, Larry Smith's brilliance, and the Soul Bowl's fire. In Lorman, the Braves don't just play basketball — they carry one of the SWAC's proudest traditions, and the Wizard's shadow still falls across every practice.

The non-conference reality shapes everything about Alcorn's season. Like most SWAC programs, the Braves fund their athletic department with guarantee games against power-conference opponents — road trips that pad the budget and bruise the record, but forge the toughness that wins league games in January and February. Morton's first team learned that lesson the hard way, and the 2026-27 schedule will ask the young core to grow up fast again. The formula that worked for Whitney and Bussie hasn't changed: defend relentlessly, win the home games at the Whitney Complex, and peak when the SWAC tournament arrives. In a one-bid league, the regular season is preparation and March is everything.

Recruiting to Lorman has always been about belief — convincing players that a small school in rural Mississippi can be the biggest stage of their lives. Whitney sold that vision for four decades and produced an All-American. Bussie sold it in 2022 and produced a championship. Morton's task is to sell it again to a new generation, in an era when the portal offers every player an exit ramp. The ones who stay, the history says, become legends: their numbers hang in the Whitney Complex, and their stories get told to every recruit who walks through the door. That's the pitch, and it's never been about facilities. It's about the Wizard's shadow and what it still means to play in it.
