The Story

The Cal State Northridge Matadors have been Big West battlers from the San Fernando Valley, a program that's tasted March and spends every season chasing the next trip. The Matadors' story is one of periodic breakthroughs — flashes of brilliance in a league where the tournament decides everything.

The program's NCAA trips came in 2001 and 2009: the 2009 team, in particular, gave Memphis all it could handle in the first round, falling just short of the upset. Bobby Braswell's long tenure brought stability and an up-tempo identity that made the Matadors must-see.

The Matadome — now the Premier America Credit Union Arena — is one of the Big West's great small venues: intimate, loud, and famously difficult for visitors. The building's low roof and packed bleachers create a pressure cooker that the Matadors have used to ambush better teams for decades.

The Big West wars define the season: the Valley's team against the beach schools and the UCs, with the conference tournament as the annual crucible. Northridge's history of March chaos is part of the league's fabric.

The heritage includes the 2001 breakthrough — the program's first Division I tournament trip — and the long line of Matadors who played with Valley toughness. The program's identity is pure underdog: overlooked, unbothered, and dangerous.

The 2009 near-miss against Memphis remains the 'what if' that fuels the program: so close to the second round, a reminder of how close the Matadors came to March immortality.

What defines Cal State Northridge is the fight: a Valley program that keeps swinging in the Big West's rock fights. The Matadors' next March moment is always one hot weekend away. The Matadors' San Fernando Valley roots give the program a distinct identity — a working-class fanbase, a no-frills gym, and a team that plays like it has something to prove every single night.

The Matadome's reputation is the program's great equalizer: one of the loudest small gyms in the West, where the low roof traps the noise and visiting teams wilt. Braswell's up-tempo years turned Northridge into the Big West's most entertaining team — 90-point games, pressing defense, and the kind of chaos that made the Matadors must-see. The 2001 breakthrough team's legacy is the foundation: the first Division I dance, the proof that the Valley's team belonged. The 2009 Memphis near-miss still stings, but it also showed how close the program came to glory.

Andy Newman has turned Northridge into a problem. The former Cal State San Bernardino coach enters year four at CSUN at 61-40 overall (.604) — and the 2025-26 season was the program's best in nearly two decades. Four Matadors earned All-Big West honors, the most for the program since 2007-08, and the trophy case got its crown jewel: Josiah Davis was named Big West Player of the Year and first-team all-conference, the face of a team that refused to be an afterthought in a reshuffling league.

The supporting cast around Davis was the deepest of the Newman era. Senior guard Larry Hughes II led CSUN in scoring at a career-high 17.6 points a night — fourth in the Big West — and topped the league in three-pointers made per game (3.1) with 95 total, earning second-team honors. Senior forward Mahmoud Fofana claimed the conference's Best Hustle Player award while scoring 11.3 points on a Big West-best 63.2 percent shooting and grabbing 7.9 rebounds a night; fellow senior Joshua O'Garro was the Big West's top regular-season rebounder at 9.4 a game to go with 14.4 points. Both earned honorable mention. It was a senior class that restored Northridge's Valley swagger.

The program's biggest portal swing is also its most intriguing: Marcus Adams Jr., the former four-star recruit from Los Angeles's South Bay, whose journey to Northridge ran through Kansas, Gonzaga and BYU. Adams has the talent to replace the graduated production in the frontcourt, and in Newman's up-tempo system — the coach's signature since his Division II days — he could be the Big West's breakout star. Cal State East Bay transfer Grady Lewis, a two-time all-conference big man who averaged 14 points a night in the CCAA, gives the Matadors frontcourt size they've lacked.

Newman's roster construction reflects the modern mid-major reality: blend holdovers with portal pieces and out-work everyone. Returners like Jordan Brinson, Robert Thibiant, Jalen Barbee, Aleks Szymczyk (the 6-foot-8 Frankfurt native at center) and Joseph Barrio give the rotation continuity, while the staff's recruiting pitch — Newman calls it 'money hoops' management of the portal — keeps the pipeline flowing. The Matadors open 2026-27 on November 4 against Wichita State, and the home slate includes a December 3 visit from Cal Poly.

The setting remains one of college basketball's great equalizers. The Matadome — now the Premier America Credit Union Arena — seats just 2,200, and the low roof traps every decibel; visiting teams have wilted in the Valley pressure cooker for decades. In a Big West entering its chaotic new era — Hawai'i and UC Davis gone to the Mountain West, California Baptist, Utah Valley and Sacramento State arriving, UC San Diego and UC Santa Barbara playing their final season before the WCC — Northridge's identity is the steadiest thing in the league: Valley toughness, up-tempo chaos, and a team that plays like it has something to prove every single night.
