The Story

Five wins in five days. As the No. 10 seed. In March, when everything is on the line. The Georgia Southern Eagles' run through the 2026 Sun Belt tournament was the kind of epic that gets remembered for decades — only the third program in college basketball history to win five games in five days to reach a conference final, joining 2011 UConn and 2024 NC State. The dream finally died 77-61 against No. 1 seed Troy in the championship game, but the run announced something real: under Charlie Henry, Georgia Southern basketball has arrived.

The architect is Henry, hired in March 2023 after a career spent learning from the best. He was an assistant at Alabama under Nate Oats during the Crimson Tide's rise, worked for the Chicago Bulls and Iowa State, and coached the Windy City Bulls in the G League. He brought a modern, player-development-first approach to Statesboro — and in March 2026, the school rewarded him with a four-year contract extension through the 2029-30 season. The commitment was earned: Henry's 2025-26 Eagles went 21-16 (8-10 in the Sun Belt), the program's first 20-win season in seven years, dating back to 2019-20.

The season was a story of two halves. The Eagles opened with a nine-game winning streak that carried them into the mid-major national rankings at No. 22 — the program's first-ever appearance in a mid-major poll — and the offense was a record-setting machine. Georgia Southern set program records for points (2,994), three-pointers (370), free throws made (654) and games played (37). But Sun Belt play was a grind, and an 8-10 league record left the Eagles as the No. 10 seed in Pensacola — a team nobody picked to survive the week. Then Tyren Moore happened.

Moore, the graduate guard, put together one of the great individual tournament performances in recent memory: 120 points across the five games, a Sun Belt tournament scoring record. He was joined on the all-tournament team by Alden Applewhite and Spudd Webb, as the Eagles kept winning — and winning, and winning — until the whole sport was watching. The final against Troy was a step too far, but the run rewrote what Georgia Southern basketball is allowed to dream about.

The context matters: Georgia Southern is a football school, and everyone in Statesboro knows it. The Eagles' six FCS national championships cast a long shadow, and basketball has spent decades fighting for its share of the spotlight. The program's NCAA tournament trips — 1983, 1987, 1992 — are the high-water marks that every team since has chased. The early-'90s squads were Southern Conference powers. But March has been quiet for a long time, and the 2026 run was the loudest the program has been in a generation.

The home court is new, too. After decades at Hanner Fieldhouse — the beloved 4,000-seat gym where the "Hanner Hooligans" made life miserable for visitors — the Eagles moved into the Jack and Ruth Ann Hill Convocation Center, the gleaming new arena known as "The Hill." It's a statement building for a program with statement ambitions: modern, spacious, and designed to host the kind of March basketball Henry is trying to build toward. The old-school intimacy of Hanner is gone; the big-time future is here.

The 2026-27 season is about proving the tournament run was a beginning, not a fluke. The roster turned over heavily — only two returners from the 21-win team — but the headliner is a familiar face: Tyren Moore, the tournament hero, returned to Statesboro after a stint at UAB, and he's the Sun Belt's proven big-game scorer (he led the league at 17 points per game back in 2023-24). Around him, Henry's staff has rebuilt with the portal and a clear identity: pace, shooting, and the toughness that won five games in five days.

The Sun Belt wars will define everything. Georgia State is the blood feud — "Modern Day Hate," the rivalry that splits the state — and the Panthers host the Eagles on January 20 this season in a game that will be circled twice. Troy is now the team to chase after ending the dream in the 2026 final. James Madison, App State, Texas State — the league is deep, physical, and unforgiving. The Eagles learned in Pensacola that they can beat anyone in it for a week. The task now is doing it for four months.

What defines Georgia Southern is the fight. It's a football school's basketball program that keeps swinging — and in March 2026, it landed the biggest punches in program history. Five wins in five days. A scoring record. A contract extension for the coach who built it. A new arena to grow into. In Statesboro, the next March run isn't a dream anymore. It's the expectation.
