The Story

The Nicholls Colonels are Southland Conference basketball from the bayou — a program from Thibodaux, Louisiana, that has spent its Division I life as the scrappy underdog in a league full of them. This is a program built on Louisiana toughness: athletic, fearless, and never impressed by a bigger name on the front of the other jersey. In a one-bid league where the entire season funnels into three days in March, Nicholls has made a habit of being the team nobody wants to see on their side of the bracket.

Nicholls State fielded its first men's basketball team in 1958, and the program's deepest roots are in the Division II era. Long before the Southland, the Colonels were a national factor at the lower level, reaching the NCAA Division II Elite Eight in 1976 and again in 1979. Those runs are part of the program's DNA — proof that a small school from the bayou could play with anybody when the lights were brightest.

The golden age came in the 1990s, when Nicholls finally broke through to the Big Dance. The Colonels won the Southland Conference tournament in 1995 and again in 1998, earning the program's two NCAA Division I tournament berths. Both trips ended in first-round losses to giants — Virginia in 1995 and Arizona in 1998 — but the banners in Stopher Gymnasium remain the standard everything else is measured against. Nicholls also owns Southland regular-season crowns from 1995, 1998, 2018, 2021 and 2022, a reminder that the program's relevance has never been a one-decade story.

The 2018 regular-season title kicked off the modern resurgence. Under head coach Austin Claunch, the Colonels rebuilt into a Southland contender, and when Claunch departed for an assistant role at Alabama after the 2022-23 season, the program turned to one of its own. Tevon Saddler — a former Nicholls guard who led the team in rebounding during his lone playing season in Thibodaux — took over on April 20, 2023, and immediately made history.

Saddler's first two seasons were the best back-to-back campaigns the program had ever produced. The 2023-24 Colonels went 20-14 with a 13-5 Southland mark, finishing third and storming all the way to the Southland Tournament championship game. The encore was just as loud: 20-13 in 2024-25, another 13-win conference season, another third-place finish, and a run to the tournament semifinals. It was the first time in school history Nicholls had stacked consecutive 20-win seasons, and in August 2025 the university rewarded Saddler with a contract extension through 2030.

Then came the twist nobody in Thibodaux saw coming. On June 25, 2026, the Washington Wizards hired Saddler to be the head coach of their G League affiliate, the Capital City Go-Go — a stunning leap from the Southland to the NBA pipeline for one of the youngest head coaches in the country. Saddler left Nicholls with a 54-46 overall record and a 38-22 mark in Southland play, plus the program's momentum at its highest point in decades.

The 2025-26 season itself was a step back on the floor: 14-19 overall, 12-10 in the Southland, tied for fifth. But even in a down year, the Colonels stayed dangerous in league play, and the foundation Saddler built — up-tempo, defensive-minded, guard-driven basketball — gave his successor something real to work with.

That successor is Darion Brown, who takes over for the 2026-27 season — his first as a Division I head coach. Brown inherits a program with expectations: this is no longer a rebuild job, it's a stewardship. The Southland remains a one-bid war every March, and the job description is simple — defend, run, and be peaking when the conference tournament tips off. Nicholls has done it twice before. In Thibodaux, the belief is that the third banner is coming.

Stopher Gymnasium is central to that belief. The 3,800-seat arena is pure Louisiana small-college basketball: hot, loud, intimate, with the student section right on top of the floor. When the Colonels are rolling, Stopher becomes one of the toughest outs in the Southland — the kind of building where favored teams arrive in February and leave with a loss they can't explain. The red and gray faithful pack it for rivalry nights, and the Colonels feed off the noise.

The program's identity has never wavered: tough, athletic guards, pressure defense, and a roster built from Louisiana and the Gulf South. Nicholls doesn't win with five-stars; it wins with players who play like they have something to prove, because in Thibodaux, they always do. That formula produced all-conference stars through the 2020s and kept the Colonels in the Southland's top tier even as the league's power balance shifted around them.

What defines Nicholls is bayou grit. Two NCAA trips, a rowdy little gym, a pair of 20-win seasons that reset what the program believed was possible, and now a first-time head coach with the keys to a sleeping contender. In the Southland's March wars, Nicholls is the team that hits first — and in a league where everything comes down to three games, that matters more than anything.
