The Purdue Boilermakers are the Cradle of Quarterbacks — Len Dawson, Bob Griese, Drew Brees — the program that produced more NFL passers than anyone. The 1967 Rose Bowl championship (the Griese brilliance) is the only one in school history, and the 2000 Big Ten title (the Brees magic, the Rose Bowl trip) was the modern peak.
The Joe Tiller era (1997-2008) was the revolution: the basketball-on-grass spread, Brees's record passing, and the program's arrival as a Big Ten contender. The 2022 Big Ten West title (the Jeff Brohm era's arrival) was the encore. Ross-Ade Stadium's 61,000-strong setting, the West Lafayette devotion: Purdue football is the engineers' team.
The Old Oaken Bucket against Indiana is the rivalry — the annual battle for the state. The Notre Dame rivalry (the Shillelagh Trophy) is the history. The Boilermaker traditions — the World's Largest Drum, the All-American Marching Band — are the sport's most iconic.
The Odom Purdue (2025-present) are the Big Ten's reset: the 2024 1-11 collapse (the winless Big Ten season, the the coach's exit), the 2025 new direction (the the fresh start) — rock bottom. The 2022 8-6 season (the Big Ten title game, the Citrus Bowl) is the recent history; the 2024 collapse the floor. Ross-Ade Stadium's West Lafayette crowd brings the 2022 memory: the 61,000-strong, the 2022 roar, the belief that Purdue always fights. The Big Ten wars define the fall. What Purdue are now is a program in reset — the 2025 hire the bet, the 2022 peak the proof, and the 2022 standard the goal. In West Lafayette, the 2024 season was rock bottom, and the next era starts with the kids.
The 1967 8-2 season (the Rose Bowl win, the program's only) is the heritage. The 2000 9-3 season (the Rose Bowl, the the quarterback's brilliance) is the modern lore. In West Lafayette, the 2022 Big Ten title game the standard. The 2024 1-11 collapse (the winless Big Ten season) is the recent scar. The 2025 Odom arrival (the new coach) is the new direction. The 2025 Odom era (the Big Ten climb) is the present tense.
What defines Purdue is the quarterback: the Cradle, the Brees magic, and a program that's always one great passer from the Big Ten race. In West Lafayette, the Boilermakers are the engineers' team — and the Cradle keeps producing.
