The Story

The Cardinals are the oldest continuously operating pro football franchise in America — founded in 1898 in Chicago, champions of the NFL in 1925 and 1947 — and the league's great wanderers. Chicago to St. Louis in 1960, St. Louis to Arizona in 1988: the Cardinals have been three cities' team and fully none's, carrying the oldest roots and the thinnest trophy case.

The St. Louis years were mostly bleak: the Cardiac Cardinals of the seventies — Jim Hart, Terry Metcalf — who broke hearts annually, and then the long desert of losing. The move to the desert didn't fix it: the Cardinals became the league's lovable losers, the team that found new ways to lose, decade after decade.

The Kurt Warner miracle was the exception that proved the rule: the 2008 season, the 9-7 Cardinals storming to Super Bowl XLIII behind Warner's renaissance and Larry Fitzgerald's superhuman postseason — 546 yards, 7 touchdowns, the greatest playoff run by a receiver ever. They lost to Pittsburgh on Santonio Holmes's toe-tap touchdown in the final minute, the closest the Cardinals have ever come. Fitzgerald stayed, the losing returned.

The Gannon Cardinals (2023-present) are the league's quietest rebuild: the 2024 8-9 season (the step forward), the Harrison Jr. arrival (the 2024 No. 4 pick, the generational receiver prospect), and the Murray question — the franchise quarterback's health and future, the the contract, the 2025 direction. The 2023 4-13 bottom was the teardown's price; the 2024 step the signal. State Farm Stadium's Glendale crowd brings the 2008-15 memory: the Super Bowl XLIII run, the 2015 NFC title game, the belief that the desert's team is coming. The NFC West wars define the fall. What the Cardinals are now is a franchise waiting — the Harrison brilliance the hope, the Murray question the pivot, and the 2015 standard the goal. In the desert, the 2024 step is the foundation, and the next era starts with the kids and the quarterback.

The 2008 Super Bowl XLIII run (the Warner-Fitzgerald magic, the Santonio Holmes heartbreak) remains the franchise's signature. The 2015 NFC title game (the Carolina loss) and the 2021 11-win season are the modern lore. In the desert, the 2008 run is the heritage, and the Fitzgerald era the soul.

What defines the Cardinals is the wait: the oldest franchise, two pre-Super Bowl championships, zero Super Bowls, and a fanbase that has endured it all. In the desert, the Cardinals are still chasing the first one — and 125 years of history says it's the hardest trophy in sports to win.
