About Desert Hearts Records
Desert Hearts Records is the label behind America’s house and techno underground — born in 2014 from the renegade Desert Hearts festival in the Mojave Desert, curated by Mikey Lion and the DH crew. Deep, groovy, psychedelic-tinged dance music with a motto that says it all: House, Techno & Love.

Desert Hearts Records is the beating heart of America’s house and techno underground — the label born from the Desert Hearts festival and crew, carrying the same ethos from the dancefloor to the discography. Founded in 2014 by Mikey Lion, Lee Reynolds, Marbs, Porkchop and the extended Desert Hearts family, the label bottles the crew’s signature sound: deep, groovy, psychedelic-tinged house and techno, released on a “totally-free” ethos that put the music first. One hundred releases in, it remains the voice of a movement that started with 200 friends in the Mojave Desert.
It began as a beautiful disaster. In November 2012, the founding quintet — Mikey Lion, Lee Reynolds, Porkchop, Marbs and Kristoff McKay — threw a 200-person renegade gathering deep in the Mojave Desert. The crew barely survived extreme weather and worse luck, but that first party sparked a fire. These were not industry plants: they were a colorful cast who had fallen into each other’s lives skating and surfing the beaches of San Diego — Mikey Lion in his signature top hat, Lee Reynolds the ex-pro BMX legend turned DJ, Marbs the artistic backbone, Mikey’s younger brother Porkchop the resident madman. The vibe was the product: love, radical self-expression, and positive energy, distilled.
Two years later came the label. Desert Hearts Records launched in 2014 as a “totally-free record label” — free in spirit, a platform for the movement’s musical sensibility and a home for established and emerging talent worldwide. Curation fell entirely to Mikey Lion, with Marbs handling the artwork, giving the catalog a unified aesthetic as distinctive as its sound. The debut release set the tone: Mikey Lion and Jonjo Williams’ “Voltron” b/w “Defendant,” the B-side a funky, tongue-in-cheek tribute to the Godfather of Soul James Brown working through his much-covered legal travails — a reminder that even at its most serious, Desert Hearts never loses its sense of humor.
The early catalog reads like a map of the mid-2010s underground: Andreas Henneberg, Latmun, The Glitz, jozif, TÅCHES, Dance Spirit, Fritz Carlton, Kevin Anderson, RYBO, and of course records from the core crew themselves. As the label matured, the guest list got heavier — Justin Martin, Gene Farris, Popof, Amine Edge & Dance, Doc Martin — each release filtered through Mikey Lion’s ear for the groovy, the deep, and the weird. The milestone came in mid-2021: the 100th release on Desert Hearts Records, Mikey Lion’s own debut album For The Love — a statement record from the label boss, and proof of just how prolific the little free-spirited imprint had become.
All the while, the festival kept growing — on its own terms. What started as a nomadic gathering of friends became the darling of the West Coast house and techno scene, and by its 10th anniversary — celebrated April 28 through May 2, 2022 at Lake Perris, California — Desert Hearts had grown into a festival, a label, a collective, and a community thousands strong. The bookings tell the story of its pull: Tiefschwarz, DJ Harvey, Claude VonStroke, Rodriguez Jr., DJ T, Marc Houle, Olivier Giacomotto, Mark Henning, M.A.N.D.Y., Monkey Safari. And crucially, the crew kept the events intimate even as they sold out — protecting the love-first energy of that first Mojave adventure at the beating heart of it all.
If the festival is the epicenter and the label is the voice, then the City Hearts party series became the legs — a roaming urban distillation of the desert experience that has sold out rooms in Los Angeles, New York, Tulum, Mexico City, Miami, San Francisco, Houston, Chicago, Toronto, Denver, and beyond. The DH Twitch channel extends the same mission online, beaming the crew’s sets to a global family that can’t make it to the desert. Every format carries the same message, the one printed on every flyer and release: House, Techno, & Love — We Are All Desert Hearts.
That sentence is the whole business plan. Desert Hearts proved that American underground dance music could be a movement rather than a market — that a crew of San Diego skaters with a top hat, a BMX legend, and an artist could build a festival, a label with 100+ releases, and a worldwide family on nothing but vibe, curation, and radical sincerity. In an era of corporate festivals and algorithmic playlists, the Desert Hearts family remains stubbornly, gloriously human: no Desert Hearts without the family, and no family without the love. The label is simply where that love gets pressed to wax.
The “totally-free” founding idea still shapes how the label operates: a platform first, a business second — a place where a kid with a great groove gets the same care as a touring headliner. That is why emerging producers chase a Desert Hearts Records release the way rock bands once chased a Sub Pop single: the stamp means the music passed through Mikey Lion’s ears and the family’s dancefloor, and both are brutally honest filters. From the Mojave to the livestream, the mission never changed — keep the vibe pure, keep the family close, and let the music do the preaching.
